I was curious if putting a patina on a new blade (vinegar etc.) serves a function other than aesthtic..I understand people think it helps protect the blade...is it reccommended

I feel it helps prevent the blade from rust. A carbon blade is going to develop a patina in use, so it's not really an option. Using vinegar just speeds up the process. This has been my experience with my carbon moras.

This is what I've read as well. The patina helps protect the blade from rust, but it doesn't change the fact that a carbon blade will need maintenance, especially in high moisture areas and store the knife outside of it's leather sheath as leather collects moisture.
