This week I was forcing a patina on one of my knives. I was doing some mustard but it wasn't getting as uniform darkness as I wanted it. I used some citrus juice and that didn't work as well either(at least not on top of the mustard). I then got fed up and used some Apple Cider Vinegar(ran out of white). I applied a coat and let it dry. 2-3 hours later my knife has a sort of yellow/light orange on it. Most of it came off with some light rubbing. What is it?

I should have already had nearly 100% coverage of the knife before the vinegar ;so I don't think it is rust. Could it just be left over color from the vinegar?

are you cleaning the blade each time you apply this stuff? did you wipe it off with alcohol to make sure there was no other substance to prevent even oxidation, or to cause a different reaction?

It was rust. A "patina" does not prevent rust, though it may inhibit it.

Yeah, not really sure what it was. I tried to replicate the results on another piece of 01 today, but it just discolored slightly. I am thinking it was from a reaction. It did look a bit different, but I didn't want to find out in a few months it really was rust. I knocked it off with some sandpaper and used mustard to finish it.
