It is not my want to preach about matters that do not belong here...in this place of solace and peace.

However (getting out a soapbox) this period in our nation's history will be looked upon as a time of great upheaval.

It is truly the time for decisions that will determine the continued life of our Country...and our People.

Having said that, I will make a plea to all those who come here for some small escape.

Please vote.

My step-Dad viewed "not voting" as his own protest in a political world which he despised. What he never considered was, that by not voting, he allowed the very things he hated, power over the World he loved and fought for.

My father-in-law moved to Wyoming from Maryland. He feels that in MAryland his vote made a huge difference...because Maryland did influence the electoral sytem. Now, he feels as though, casting a vote, in an national racr, is a wasted gesture.

I could not disagree more fiercely.

If nothing else we pattern the lives of our children by becoming involoved in our "For the People, by the people" form of governement.

If each of us, would focus our attention on Washington, and hold our representation accountable for their actions, I am convinced that there would be great change.

The key word here is "responsibility".

Please vote.

I know there are a great many of you who are smarter, more adept with words, and more educated than I can ever hope to be.

My infintile, naive plea is proably laughable to many who would "poo-poo" this thread.

Now more than ever, we cannot trust elected officials lving a half-world away to seal the fate of the republic which has given us life, and the document which binds us to the land.

"When in the Course of human events it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation."

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

I dont know what to say about you today...except that you and i have both been busy tonight reading different laws and statutes.

Um, i haveta say i couldnt agree more with the gist of what youre saying.
Everyone should vote, but i fear that the people that feel as your stepfather does, as i do, feel this way because since we can remember there hasnt been a party nominate or actual president that is worth voting for , and these upcoming elections are no different.
Politicians by there very nature are born liars and i've resigned myself to the fact that since i dont care for what either parties are saying, that my vote wont matter or do any good in the grand scheme of things and i guess i really havent felt like choosing the lesser evil.. lord how i wish that were untrue and that we had someone to step up to the plate and right all that is wrong with our government in one fell swoop. but then i'm afraid we'd all be calling him "your Highness"......something that our beloved constitution was designed from the start to abolish.

don't you have option in USA to vote blank? that's a pretty strong way to show your dissatifaction with politics
 
If there is no one on the ballot you think fit, write someone in. Such a vote is not wasted.

A bullet fired with deliberation, careful aim, and good intent is not wasted, even if it should fail to hit its intended target. A bullet left in the magazine until the opportunity to fire it is forever passed may well have been wasted beyond redemption.

Vote for the person you think will best fulfill the duties of the office in question.

However, given that at times a protest vote might be best, I do wish there was a "none of the above" option on our ballots. The results then would be very interesting, or at least perhaps more accurate in their reflection of the will of the electorate.

I thought that the Republicans could actually put an agent of change into the oval office in the form of Ron Paul. But alas, it was not to happen :~(

This said, I shall vote for the lesser of the evils in hopes of protecting certain items that are on the bill of rights.
 
I can't wait to vote:thumbup: I know a lot of younger folks, college age and up to early 30's and I've never seen any of them this fired up to vote either.

I think the internet has revolutionized the political process. First with the spread of information and fact checking. Second it has gotten tons of people contributing to campaigns.


The name of the game is money in politics. The more that the little guy can get his money in there the more things will go his way once the candidate he's backing gets into office (or HOPEFULLY so):thumbup:
 
It is our own faults that the there is no one worth voting for. Everyone complains but no one does a thing to fix the problem. All politicians are pretty much bad but in general no one votes for someone that is "honest". People don't want to here the truth. With the Economy no one person can fix it. Who would vote for someone that says i may not fix the economy but i will give it my best effort to fix it. That is the truth all someone can do is give their best but it is up to use to help fix the problem no one person can fix it. No one wants to hear the truth that we are all responsible for our problems.

I think Bill Clinton did a pretty good job of fixing the economic mess Reagan and Bush Jr left us last time. Now of course he had the help of congress so in that sense you are correct that no one person can fix it. It takes all cooperation.

However we have a pretty good blueprint from the Clinton years: Cut unnecessary spending. Raise revenue to offset the debt/deficit while channeling more money to consumers, encourage new technology. Any new spending needs to be offset with tax increase or spending cuts in other areas.

I feel fairly certain that once the adults regain control of the gov't again that we'll see a fairly rapid turn around.

The problem is one that has been faced before and there is a plan that yeilds success.

Some would like to think the challenge is somehow impossible but look at the oil price drop. Only weeks ago we were told the only way we could drop the price of oil was to drill our way out of it. Conservation would not work. Now oil has fallen and OPEC is even cutting production due to oversupply.:thumbup:
 
TV news here in Britain is considerably biased in favour of Oblaira, who their commentators seem to have near-enough decided has already won (hardly a surprise, since like themselves he would be promoting global government and Gore's big lie)..... so has the Republican campaign really run out of steam, as is being suggested?
 
Obama is NOT going to fix the economy. That's okay, neither would his opponent. The only long term fix to the economy is going to be when WE as the citizens of America quit living beyond our means, and start figuring out how to rely upon ourselves, and not the promises of still another empty suit. The economy will be repaired when people quit feeling entitlement and greed towards another mans earnings, and learn that debt is NOT an acceptable liftestyle.

The price of fuel has dropped. Hooray. We're still reliant upon countries that hate us for oil. That 3% figure the left constantly spouts out is bogus. The Midwest US is estimated to have more oil than anywhere else in the world, and with the continued development of Heavy Oil technology, it WILL be accessible. We just put in the first Heavy Oil well in the United States at Milne Point on the North Slope. So far it has been very successful. Somehow, I doubt CBS reported that one though....

But hey! we can't offend Al Gore and the Democrats! Much better that we remain reliant upon other countries who resent us than to drill anything ourselves. Why should we do it in the US with EPA standards and OSHA when we can just let Russia continue thier wild surge in oil production and exploration? (at the mere cost of hundreds of work place fatalities, and horrible pollution that's unimaginable here in the US.)

That's okay. We can starve to death in the dark right here in the good ole US of A and feel good that we let everyone else destroy the enviroment instead of doing anything for ourselves and seeking energy independence.
 
I would have liked Ron Paul. Or I would have liked a re-incarnation of Pres. Reagan to fix the mess that Clinton left us in. Oh well, after this election, I think that things will become *much* clearer...
 
The economy is like nature, in my opinion. It's not really under our control and in a free market system, like America, it isn't supposed to be.
Rich or poor, I dont care that much cause it goes in cycles anyway.
What matters are our freedoms, the bill of rights. Those things we cannot lose and we cannot give away in small pieces.
This election, to me, is not really democrat v. republican. Its Democracy v. Socialism.
Even if it doesn't end up the way we want it, remember: there are three branches and they all have limiting powers on the other two.

Afraid I'm in this camp myself. We've got more major parties here in Canuckistan, but still. I'm probably putting on a tinfoil hat here, but sometimes it seems we live in just another plutocracy that puts on the show of democracy to placate those common folk who feel compelled to participate in "important decisions". :(

I don't think it's too unreasonable to say that those with the most influence would never trust the truly important matters to average Joes like you or I.
