I am looking to buy one or the other as a large companion to my smaller camp knives. I was wondering if someone could give the advantages and disadvantages of each of these knives for general use with camping?

Archer;

If you are planning on haveing to do any "brush work" then you WILL want to have the Patrol Machete with you. The Brute will work well for close in work on vines, small branches,and small diameter trees. Where it really works well is in kindling gathering and splitting of small logs (ya just beat on the flat on the spine).
I traded off my Brute but now have the Machax, Patrol Machete, Companion, and the Magnum Camp. I am most impressed with the Patrol Machete(see my "mini-review)with the way it fits my hand and never seems to tire out my wrist or forearm. The P.M. is also lighter to carry even with the 14" blade(or maybe it just feels that way to me).
They are both GREAT knives and have their special niches for use, however, the P.M. is the one that I will ALWAYS have along with me.

No doubt I will get another Brute again since it is just a cool looking and feeling blade.

I have an old Brute, BJ KNives made, and it is a beast, pure and simple. great heft, indestructible, like a bolo and Khukri together, never wil part with it. It chops and digs like an axe and shovel. Durable enough so that the edge is asily cleaned up if you ding it on rocks. New one has to be better with High carbon, and the kydex is a hell of an improvement over any BJ leather.

i just got the brute today, alll i can say is wow!!!

love the handle and sheath, feels good am going to do some chopping with it later, looks like a good piece of steel, i also have a home made machete, and an ontario 12 inch machete to compare it to.
