Pattada-like Spyderco w/ a better steel?

I'm in lust with the Pattada, but I have a hard time with the N690 steel. For the price, I feel it should at least have S30V. From what I've read, N690 is akin to VG-10. Not that it's a 'bad' steel, but for the price, I'd expect something nicer. In one of the threads, Sal asked if an M390 version would be popular. It got lots of "Heck yeah!" responses, but I'm not holding my breath.

So...if I want a slim knife, like the Pattada, but want a better steel, and want to stay in the Spydie family, what do I choose?

It's an option. Our legal limit in Miami is also 4 inches. (Though most cops still use their hand SMH). So I would probably trim a little off the tip and make it look like a huge delica.

Your closest current comparison would be the Military, side by side they are surprisingly similar. I'd recommend considering trying the N690 however, I think its fantastic stuff, and prefer it personally to S30v in my daily uses. Other than the Military the Opus or Police may be worth a look.

I'd also recommend the Police 4 in K390. It's actually a thinner stock than the Pattada so it's even slicier.

Thank you very much! Any particular reason you prefer N690?

N690 has decent enough edge retention and sharpens up lightning quick to a super fine edge. I love steels that behave that way, VG-10, N690, the various Sandvik steels. I don't do marathon cardboard cutting, so occasional touch ups to keep it sharp works great for me.

Get a Hungarian off the exchange imo, they are typically way underpriced

I was all ready to go with the Opus, but then I read that it has teflon washers. I really don't like teflon washers. I prefer phosphur bronze, like all my other knives.

I got a Pattada a while ago and I really like it! It was sort of my "gateway" Spyderco that got me back into collecting knives with holes in the blade. :)

I don't know if "collectability" is a factor for you at all, but after the Pattada is discoed you will be happy to have one, I bet. Having just carried a Military today, I think the Pattada carries a little smaller and I like the wire clip, even tho I thought I wouldn't. It came nice and sharp, like most of my Spydercos.

Anyway, there are a couple random thoughts to encourage you to check out the underrated Pattada.
