Pattern anodizing titanium questions

Just starting to anodize titanium, so far I think I have a good grasp on the process but I'm looking at getting into bringing out subtle patterns and looking for info. I'm using a 0-120v 0-5amp power supply.

I understand about using masks by using different glues, nail polish etc to create patterns and crisp separations in colors but some of the finishes out there seem to be using a different approach.

One that interests me is the fingerprint or alien skin anodizing Warren Thomas has on many pieces. First off I'm not trying to steal this makers recipe but just looking for a basic idea of how he is getting the underlying patterns while still retaining a single anodized color. Ive seen this asked in threads before and most people have a guess but nobody seems to know for sure. Info ranges from acid etching prior to anodizing all the way to using different types of oils to allow a certain amount of bleed through while anodizing. I'd like to try and experiment with creating a similar process but this would take a ton of trial and error along with gallons of contaminated anodizing bath solution.

Anyone have any pointers on where to start?
