Good morning all,

I definitely like the work JTknives has been doing as far as making HT and surface ground blanks available to us here.

As a hobby guy with limited time cutting out and doing a profile is kinda eh. Been there and done that enough times.

To that end, I was wondering if anyone would like to "donate" any profiles to help him build up a portfolio/catalog of profiles for folks to just order from his site?

JT would you be interested in that at all? I think it might be gauche to let someone order another knifemaker's profile without their consent. This way there would be no problems like that.

Personally I would like all of the traditional western and Japanese kitchen cutlery.

For newbies we could just recommend them to go to his site, order the 3" blade drop point hunter and (if they have a grinder) they would be off to the races.

Anyway, just a thought I had. I would certainly like it. If you are open to it JT I could even reach out to the DCknives guy and see if he would make his patterns available. He might get a kick out of having them available to folks as a physical blank.

Thoughts?

I like the idea. I have been trying to round up designs and what not but you guys have been keeping me quite busy. We would love to have a catalog of different blades that are ready to go. We have tried to do that with some of the designs we have cut lately. Our website is a work in progress. Been trying to come up with a slick way to order custom blanks.

but yeah I’m game, you guys are my customers so what ever you want (within reason;) I will try and make happen.

I once had illusions of drafting up a few knife styles in ACAD fusion. It would be easy to change the materials types for options such as pins, scales, liners etc for each template. The customer would start by making standard selection - steel type followed by profile, length, handle type, pin stock, liner colour, lanyard hole etc. Each option would correspond with a number so that as they go through the selection process a part number is generated. Once they finish a part number would be generated and the website would pull a pre-made render so that they are essentially generating their own custom design. There would need to be renders available for each part number which would be thousands.

Example, if you offered 5 steel types, 10 profiles, 5 lengths, 5 handle material options, 5 liner colors, 5 pin options, yes or no lanyard option, yes or no jimping option you would have 125,000 various options.

Holy crap that's a lot of renders. I guess you wouldn't need a render for each steel type (as steels look mostly the same) or pin option would reduce the number to 5000 options but you would probably have more options than I listed. Sounds like a project for a summer student one summer.

Funny that once I wrote this out, I realized how daunting of a task it would be.

I had never visited the DCknives page, that’s a nice resource. I don’t see why he wound mind using his designs. I know I have seen a few of those patterns come through my door for heat treating.

Feel free use the profiles I provided for the kith.

Great thank you.

I'll reach out to the DC knives guy and see if hes cool with using some or all of his patterns.

If it's someone's signature style Like rhino knives or something that is clearly your own style I wouldn't feel comfortable using that anyway but just for normal stuff I think it's a way to go. I mean the Japanese knives Definitely have standard shapes. An artist puts their flair on the execution and handle mostly.

JT you might need to hire someone if you become the go to guy.... :)

Anyone else have any files they would be ok sharing for the portfolio?

We might want to have it labeled as the bladeforums catalog. Let anyone use it but Give credit where credit is due.

None of the profiles I provided are unique. I refined belly profiles and handle angles based on personal use and customer feedback. Anyone could do that.

While not a big deal to me, it might be a good idea to use the makers initials or name in the file number to prevent hard feelings. Could prevent some problems down the road.

Thanks guys! I have am email in to dcknives as well.

Onward!

If you want the designs I provided for the two styles you made for me please feel free.

JT Dan from dcknives says it's a go. What a good guy. I'll forward the email to you but here's what he wrote.

"Not a problem. As long as the patterns are not re-sold for profit. The idea is that they should always remain free as in beer. Anything that encourages people to take up the craft, I support.

Best wishes,

Dan"

So My question is what does he mean by “resold for profit”. Like charging people for the actual design/pattern or making any money off anything to do with that design? I make money off cutting and processing blade blanks for you guys. I don’t have a fee for the “pattern” just the processing/material

We are also in the process of looking for and switching to another website provider. Our current provider is very limited in the options thy offer for our store. We have been working on setting up the plasma blank ordering page but it’s been slow going. We have had to enter in close to 200 different prices for one item because their software won’t allow simple multiplication. So we are looking elsewhere. The plasma ordering item will be going live soon, possibly today. Thanks guys for wanting to help get it further along by adding profiles.

hmmm, Ive had excellent feedback on my 165mm petty and ill never be able to make very many of them, JT feel free to share that one, it is an absolute beast in aebl. The key is to make sure the handle is angled correctly and does not drop down. This one is unique as in its got a pointy tip that gets ghost thin if you grind it with enough distal taper but it still has some belly making it a good multipurpose kitchen utility knife. Also small enough to fit into tighter spaces. Also has a decent flat spot to be an effective mincer....it started off as the allium assassin but is actually probably best at trimming "home size" proteins.

He knows it is your business. He just means he wouldn't be for selling the design itself. So no worries there.

That looks very nice!
