Pattern Resource?

I know some of the traditional patterns, and I know there are endless variations and versions.

Is there a book or other resource that is recommended in order to learn more about what constitutes one pattern versus another?

Levine's Guide to Knives and Their Values. Fourth Edition is best all-around reference, but very pricey because it is out of print. Third Edition will work for purposes of pattern identification.

Excellent resource, but I couldn't help noticing the absence of a Wharncliffe blade, that modern day Texas Jack's are different then the one depicted, and I'm assuming the Maize is another name for the Sway Back Jack.

Alnamvet........

The Texas Jack can be found in different patterns depending on the company, sometimes as a Trapper Jack or as depicted here as a Moose ( clip and spey)......................As for the Maize and Sway back two different knives, it's not always about the handle but the handle/blade configuration...................look at Codger's bottom photo of the Pruning and Sway back there's a much large handle on the Maize/Pruning knife.

In all honesty if someone was showing me knives and called the pruning/corn or cotton sampler a sway back I'd have to believe they didn't know there patterns

Individual cutleries had their own names for patterns of frames and for blades. Some made some patterns and not others, both frames and blades. And names for both have evolved over time. Merchants also enter into the mix with their own labeling. Quite often they do not label patterns at all, but rather give technical descriptions of frames and blade content.

Due to possible copyright issues some posts have been moved offline. If it is determined, by someone smarter then me, that it's ok to post them here they will be reinstated. Thanks for your understanding.

whoops that was me-I'm hoping for those scans should be OK. They are very interesting and informative.
Sorry to cause a headcache.
