On your latest purchases, have you been placing more importance on the

blade pattern or the handle material?

Over all pattern of knife, not just blade. But I would have to say handle material to answer your inquiry.

Choice of blades first, frame pattern second, and cover material last.
Most importantly, it has to cut the way I want, I've gotta be able to handle and carry it, and last it has to look good.

I've never bought a knife simply because I liked the handles.

Difficult to answer. I also think the overall pattern of the knife is the first thing I look at (and size). Then, the shape of the blade. Finally, the handle composition, including bolsters and other materials.

The blade (shape, steel) is paramount (and the shape of the handle ! Gosh, talk about those Saddlehorn handles, I just love them). If the knife is available with nice scales, it's the cherry on the cake. I could even accept those funky Micarta scales if the blade is revolutionary in some way or another.

Once I decide on the most appealing blade pattern, I wait for the best looking handle.

However, I'm looking at a TC Barlow, but I can't decide if I want a pen or just a single sheepsfoot.

Overall for me as well. I'm looking at the handle shape, how it blends and flows with the blade shape, the materials, how it feels in the hand. Except for stag. Put some real barky popcorn stag on it, and I'm a sucker for it.

The blade of the knife has the most influence for me; however, if I like a pattern enough, the blade doesn't matter all that much.

Take these two GEC knives - a #72 lockback and a #73 linerlock. I prefer the blade of the #73 linerlock and will carry that one much more often than the other although it is more difficult to open (hard pull) and more difficult to close (watch your fingers!!!!). The pattern of both is more-or-less the same with the #72 being a bit longer and with a lanyard tube. Now, if the blades were switched between the two, I give the #72 more pocket carry and use.

I'm not too particular on my handles, it doesn't matter if it's delrin, or stag, so as long as it's a pattern I think I'd find useful I'll warm up to it. I'm learning to appreciate all sorts of different materials.

It's the whole package beginning w/ the blade design. Not looking for a particular style, the blade simply needs to 'fit/match/compliment' the frame.
