Another question for you that might seem stupid.

Is a pattern a description for a certain style? Are the numbers that I've seen GEC uses for the different knives something other companies use?

Different companies use different numbers and letters for their patterns. A pattern # for Case is not necessarily the pattern # GEC uses.

The names are more based on tradition and history, and to some extent the shape of the handle, the number of blades, and the combination of blade types.

A trapper, for example, usually has one or two blades of similar length, the main blade being a clip point, and the secondary a spey blade, but there are variations. If the handle is shaped like a cigar, it may be called a Cuban or cigar trapper.

It's quite a broad subject that I have been trying to learn myself.

Usually, but a lot of manufacturers add their own flavor to a given traditional pattern, so that the pattern may be recognizable, yet significantly different, from company to company.

Edit to ad: There is a thread going on right here that demonstrates the confusion about naming conventions. Good fun! :)
