I LIKE ALL CAPS---I'M NOT YELLING
------------------------------------------------------------

I TESTED 3 KNIVES -BOTH IN MY BACKYARD YESTERDAY AS WELL AS IN MY GARAGE THIS MORNING

I'M NOT COMPARING THEM TO EACH OTHER--
JUST GIVING THE RESULTS AS THEY WERE OBTAINED.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THE KNIVES:

A PATTON UTILITY-FORGED 01(THIS KNIFE)

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=461032

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A NEW(TO ME) -BUSSE "HELL RAZOR"(MY FIRST BUSSE)-OBTAINED THIS WEEK-VERY GOOD CONDITION.EDGE LOOKED NEW.STANDARD SIZE GRIPS.

6 PHOTOS OF BOTH

http://www.putfile.com/pic.php?img=5030034

TOOK THE GREEN PARACORD OFF THAT THE PREVIOUS OWNER HAD INSTALLED.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

LAST WAS A RANGER RD-6 THAT BILL SIEGLE RE-PROFILED/RE-SHARPENED THE EDGE AND SCOTT TANGUAY MODIFIED THE GRIPS--

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

THIS WAS NOT A BEAT IT UNTIL IT BREAKS TEST

THIS WAS A "WHICH KNIFE CUTS/CHOPS BETTER TEST"

I AM NOT NEAR AS QUALIFIED AS CLIFF IS--THESE ARE JUST MY OBSERVATIONS.

I DO HAVE 36 YEARS MARTIAL ARTS EXPERIENCE AND AM QUITE QUALIFIED TO EXPRESS OPINIONS ON HOW WELL A KNIFE CUTS FROM A "FIGHTING OR KILLING" POINT OF VIEW(ALTHOUGH GETTING IN A KNIFE FIGHT IS THE LAST THING I WOULD EVER WANT TO DO)...

AS FAR AS CHOPPING---(WOOD AND CARDBOARD TUBING)

#1:HELL RAZOR WON THAT CONTEST.IT'S THE LONGEST AND HAS A VERY COMFORTABLE HANDLE.(STANDARD).ACCURACY WAS LAST-BUT THAT WAS DUE TO IT BEING THE LONGEST.AND I'M TAKING ABOUT 1/4" DIFFERENCE IN THE CUTS..

#2-PATTON.VERY SHARP-EASY TO CONTROL.TENDED TO WEDGE ITSELF DUE TO THIN BLADE.MOST ACCURATE(SHORTEST BLADE)-VERY COMFORTABLE HANDLE.

#3: RANGER RD-6.IT CHOPPED ABOUT AS WELL AS THE PATTON BUT THE HANDLE STARTS TO "STING" AFTER 20 OR SO CHOPS.I TOLD SCOTT I WANTED THE KNIFE GRIP TO BE "SECURE" IN MY HAND--AND IT IS "OUTSTANDING" IN RETENTION.

AS FAR AS SLICING (APPLES,HARD STYROFOAM,T-SHIRT TARGET)

#1:PATTON-MOST ACCURATE-EASIEST TO CONTROL(ALSO THE SMALLEST).RAZOR SHARP BLADE MATED TO A EASY TO CONTROL HANDLE.FAR AND AWAY THE BEST OF THE 3.

#2: RANGER RD-6(WITH BILL SIEGLE'S EDGE).BIG DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS AND THE PATTON.BLADE IS 1/4" THICK AND MUCH HARDER TO MAKE CONTROLLED CUTS.

#3:BUSSE "HELL RAZOR".IT'S THE LONGEST.WORST ON APPLES AND SLICING CARDBOARD(THICKEST EDGE).

THE EDGES OF THE OTHER 2 ARE MUCH THINNER/ SHARPER.(I GOT EACH AS SHARP AS I CAN ON A SHARPMAKER)

EACH CAN SHAVE HAIR OFF MY ARM(-BUSSE TAKES THE MOST EFFORT)

ERGONOMICS---

THE PATTON'S GRIP IS LARGE AND HAND FILLING."FEELS" LARGE WHEN I'M HOLDING IT STATIONARY-BUT THAT "FEELING" GOES AWAY WHEN I'M USING IT TO CUT SOMETHING AND IS REPLACED WITH THE FEELING--"DAMN THIS KNIFE CUTS WELL"-

BALANCE IS MORE TOWARDS THE HANDLE.LOOKS MORE LIKE A RACE CAR THAN A TRUCK.

IS MARKETED AS A "UTILITY KNIFE"--AND CAN BE USED AS AN OUTDOOR KNIFE,KITCHEN KNIFE,HUNTING KNIFE AND FIGHTING KNIFE WITH ABOUT EQUAL EFFECT.

BLADE STAINS EASILY--BUT STAYS SHARP...EVER WANTED TO TRY A FORGED BLADE?THIS IS THE MAKER TO GET IT FROM HAND'S DOWN-ESPECIALLY FACTORING IN COST.($175.00)
-------------------------------

THE RANGER'S GRIP(MODIFIED BY SCOTT TANGUAY) IS VERY VERY COMFORTABLE AND LOCKS THE KNIFE IN YOUR HAND.NOT GOOD FOR EXTENDED CHOPPING WITHOUT GLOVES.EXCELLENT FOR RETENTION AND CONTROL.

IT'S GOOD POINT'S ARE IT'S RAZOR SHARP BILL SIEGLE EDGE AND SCOTT'S GRIP.(IT IS ALSO THE LEAST EXPENSIVE).WOULD HAVE RATED LAST IN IT'S ORIGINAL STATE.

LOOKS LIKE A BEAT UP TRUCK-AND FEELS LIKE A BAR OF METAL COMPARED TO THE OTHER 2(GRIP IS EXCELLENT-I'M REFERRING TO HOW THE KNIFE FEELS ONCE YOU PICK IT UP).USED AS A MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING KNIFE TO HIT SOFT AND HARD TARGETS.GOOD KNIFE TO LEAVE IN YOUR TRUCK OR B.O.B.

IF YOU GET ONE(RANGER)-SEND IT TO BILL SIEGLE FIRST-AND THEN TO SCOTT TANGUAY.

---------------

THE BUSSE "HELL RAZOR".

I'M GOING TO SEND THIS TO BILL SIEGLE AND HAVE HIM PUT ONE OF HIS FAMOUS RAZOR EDGES ON IT--THEN I'LL RE-TEST IT.

IT IS THE BEST "FIGHTING" KNIFE OF THE 3-AND HAS ONE OF THE BEST KNIFE "GRIP" ERGONOMICS I'VE EVER FELT.EASY TO CHANGE GRIPS AND KNIFE "FLOWS" THE BEST WHILE DOING THE KNIFE CUT DRILLS.

IT CAN BE HELD BOTH "UP CLOSE" AND HELD TOWARDS THE POMMEL FOR INCREASED CHOPPING ABILITY AS WELL.

THESE STANDARD GRIPS FEEL GOOD TO ME AND THE KNIFE IS BALANCED MORE LIKE A FIGHTER THAN A CHOPPER

IT'S A GREAT COMBAT KNIFE FOR SURE---ONE WOULD BE HARD PRESSED TO DAMAGE IT AT ALL.

LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING IT BACK FROM BILL SIEGLE AND RE-TESTING IT.------------------------.

SEE PHOTOS -OF KNIVES,CARDBOARD TUBING(1/2" THICK),AND BOXES.(3 CUTS ON THE BOX WITH EACH KNIFE)

AGAIN--THIS WAS JUST MY LITTLE HOUR LONG TEST--

-YOUR RESULTS MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE SAME OR EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE.

HOPE YOU ENJOYED IT.....

Hi Bill... good review!

Did you do any wood carving or rope cutting?
I'm curious about the blade geometry and thier ability to cut well.

I find with cutting hard wood you find out 2 things.
1) how comfortable the handle is long term.
2) how well the edge and blade geometries are for cutting.
3) general conrol issues with the knife

This would be good to do if all edges had a 15 degree profile.
That way you would be testing the blade geometry more
then the edge.

I have a BK CU/7 and reprofiled it to 15 degrees from the factory
edge and it makes a world of difference.

Yes Sir I did(last night)---about 5 minutes / knife

The Patton was the best...(lightest-easist to control)
#2: the Ranger
#3: Hell Razor

they were much closer in whiitling performance than chopping .

and you are 110% correct--I would need to have the same edge put on each knife to make it more equal.

The Patton knife is as sharp as The sharpest Knife I own(one from Bill Siegle)

Thanks for reminding me I did whittle last night..and you made some excellent points...

great!

Do the Hell Razor's ridges degrade cutting ability?

I never held one so I'm not sure how deep they are by
just looking at the pics. thx!

I think they do when cutting apples or other soft items.(slowly)

While cutting fast I could not detect any difference between it(Hell Razor) or Ranger RD-6.

The Hell Razor is a VERY ERGONOMIC knife.Very comfortable to hold and change hand position on.

The ridges are very shallow(less than they look in photos)

Thanks for the review, I look forward to using my Patton as well. I own one, I just havent used it yet. Good to see some pictures, thanks.

If it's in 01-make sure you clean the blade after cutting fruit or it will stain..But you GOTTA see how well it cuts!!!

will do Bill, it will be awhile and the waiting will drive me crazy lol...I keep telling myself, must stay strong lol.

Hell Man--
Go cut a few apples.wash the Blade .

It will be worth it...

.and having a knife you never use is like having a Gun you never shoot.

Nice work, the Patton knife looks solid. What were the mods to the RD6 handle? In regards to edges, a report with the initial edge profile is valuable as a lot of people never change it. Updates with a reduced profile where they are all the same are of course informative as well.

Hello Cliff,
I had Scott Tanguay modifiy the Handles of all my Rangers

Photos

I should have tested them all with either the same edges(Siegle) or as you stated with Factory edges.

Will do so next time(and you have forgotten more about this topic than I will ever hope to know)

and the Patton knife is EXCELLENT!!!!

Everyone that uses it- LOVES IT!!!
