To Patton fans this will come as a cool treat. Back in the 99 NC show was the first time I met Rob patton and he had this "Mandrita" (Back then called the Archangel) prototype.. it had leather stacked handles, and a big brass bulb at the end as a very comfortable "alive" feeling counterbalance which set the knife "true(??)" after every motion.
The knife has gone thru many evolutions from wood handles to swells and grooves and the newer mandritas have a ew finger notch. The "Archangel" had a simple cross guard much like Patton's bead blasted Tacticals, but somewhere along the line Mr. Rob got hit real hard in the head and this new evil guard appeared.. you can imagine my surprise when the gothic "quillion" reared it's head to me a year or so later...
Apparently this prototype has been thru a lot of tests and really defined the knife's design today.. despite newer incarnations having flashier guards, more ELEGANTLY tight and SMOOTh sheaths, and more impeccable woods, somethign about this old beater charmed me and made her the most beautiful.. I was very happy when I asked Mr. patton to sell her to me this Guild Show... Bowie's were never my "thing" but this knfie alone really made me do a double take. This thing feels so alive in the hand, is increadibly fast, balanced and comfortable.. and looks like it's a living beast... the lines and the temper on her is in my opinion unlike any other Mandrita you've done.. they are all wonderful but there was justa spit more heart in this one.. it is my honour to own her.
Thanks Rob! You said it right! "If your life depended on it and you call upon her, she shan't fail you." I don't want to find out but I am sure she will
