Patton Sword as investment

I've located 4 "Patton" M1913 Calvary swords for sale. They each appear to be genuine and correct, with the appropriate scabbard, and in excellent, near new condition. What might be considered a fair price, or where should I look for info? I know nothing of swords. I have to move fairly quickly if I want to get all four.

I've been watching an upward trend on these for a few years. Dealers seem to be generally pricing in the $500-$700 range. Auctions might yield a bit less than the lower price. There is a clamor for scabbards, so swords with scabbards are selling at somewhat of a premium. There may be a cache or three yet to be uncovered but if you have to have them, price is a bit relative anyway.

One note is to be careful of reproductions. The Windlass is easy to spot, no markings and the weight difference is substantial. The swords from Sarco Inc. bear watching though. They are marked, the shape of the bowl and grip is better than the Windlass and the weight is much closer. It is worth looking closely at their pictures (no link handy)

There are some web pages dedicated to the sword which explain correct marks. Google for those and dealer listings and you will see a bunch of info and examples.

Go for it, if they seem right to you.

Cheers

Thanks for the info and links. Planning to buy if I can find the time to go up and examine them again (they are a four hour round trip from me). Hopefully they will be there and be legit. If I do end up with one or more, I will be sure to post them up here. Bowiesword, I will be sure to let you know if I get them. Thanks again.

I played with a Patton at a recent gunshow. I had heard of them over the years but had never had the opportunity to pick one up before. It is not my kind of sword due to its military look, but I was very impressed with the balance and feel. It just felt 'right' in my hand. A very well designed sword I thought.

Update: went back to look at the swords. One had been purchased. One remains w/ the original scabbard. Two have repro scabbards apparently. The original sword and scabbard is $350.00; the other two are $250.00.
I decided to pass on these swords.
