Is anyone out there interested in knowing about where Paul Basch is? Some of you may or may not like him, but he is still a piece of history in the knife world, and is a very kind, and generous man. If you are interested, you can email me, and I will update you on him. His health is not so good, and he has been in the hospital off and on for the past 5 months. You can contact me at www.watchman8888@yahoo.com

I like Paul, and I knew he has been having some health problems. I didn't know, however, that he has had more of them recently. :(

Yes, he had to have his left foot removed due to complications with gangrene from diabetes. He is in Minnesota living with his brother Don, and his wife when he isn't in the hospital.

For awhile there after they removed his foot, he was doing real well, but lately has not been feeling well at all. I think he is depressed a lot due to the medications he takes.

Thanks for posting about Paul.
Paul gave many well known makers their start, Pauls knowledge about the custom knife industry is unequaled. Not only that he is a truly great man.

At knife shows he has a bag of knives, he lets kids reach in and pick one out. Or he ask them to pick a hand, and the knife in the hand is their's. They are all good quality knives, not junk. He builds a customer base at a young age :) He'll offer to everyone the chance to pick up and touch any knife on his table, no matter what the cost. All around great guy. Too bad he got a raw deal in some other areas. My whole family knows him from shows, we'll include him in our prayers at dinner tonight.

You are so right. I used to sell Paul little knives that I would run across that I knew he was not interested in. I would ask him what he was going to do with them, and he would say "Give them away" After being with him at a few shows, I actually watched him do exactly what you said. The kids would sometimes look at him with suspicion in their expressions, and look up at their dad with a bewildered look. It was so funny to watch. The kids would just say "Are you serious?!" Paul got such a kick out of doing that. He loves kids!

I wish Paul well! I do miss him at shows. Hope he will be in Arkansas.

Paul is a good guy! Spent a lot of time with Paul when we were both working for A.G. Russell. He is a character!

I doubt very seriously if Paul will be at any knife shows for some time, but I plan to be there.I will try to find you there. I live in Van Buren, Ar. by Fort Smith. Not to far from Gentry. Will you be set up there, or just walking around visiting?

Paul would probably not remember me but I met him at the annual NCCA knife show a few years ago. He was definitely one of the good guys. Very patient and gave me an indepth history of the knifemaker whose knife I ended up buying from him. The price was excellent too. The knife community needs people like Paul.

Hope Paul is doing well.

Peter

Good thoughts friends.
I believe there is a lesson from the good folks, if each of us does our best to make the world of knives a better place, it will happen for us and those around us.
Paul is on my mind daily, and prayers.

Good News!
I talked to Paul today, his spirits are high and he figures he will be going home in a coluple of weeks. (?) He was anxious for lunch time which is a good thing, he has lost a lot of weight. Any who wish to send hem a card, his address is
3645 Wellington Lane North
Plymouth, Minn. 55441

Yes, and also there is supposed to be an article about Paul in the next issue of Blade magazine. Don, his brother told me that he only weighs 170 pounds!

Thanks Ed, it is good to hear that he is doing better. Paul keeps making our knife world a better place than the way he found it and we can all learn from his example.
