This is the blade that I profiled out at IG's place. Sorry about the crappy pic but it is late. It is made of 1/4'' D2, 12 1/2" overall with a 6 1/2" blade with a flat grind. This is my best attempt so far :o ...Who do you recommend for heat treatment of 1-2 blades?? I know that TKS will do small batches, how about Paul Bos or others that I am not aware of?? Thanks

Paul Bos all the way.

Edited to add that I'm sure somebody will let you throw your one or two D2 blades in with their lot of at least 20 blades.

Paul Bos will do small batches . The cost is higher but you and be assured of a cryo treatment and everyblade has been rockwelled as part of the service. Plus if it is not D2 he will let you know.

If you would like more information about Paul Bos's services you can check it out here

I just sent a bunch of blades into Paul Bos for heat treating. I haven't used his service before, but as the posters before me indicate, he is highly recommended. I am looking forward to getting my blades back. Even though the brochure was updated a while ago, his prices are the same. I inquired with e-mail and Paul wrote me back quickly to let me know that the prices were current.

Nice job Louis  And D2  We should form a new maker/low budget group to send out batches for HT.I'd love to make some stuff from S30v and D2,maybe when I finish screwing up all my cheap steel ;)

Paul Bos or D'Holder. I understand that TKS hardens D2 to ~57 HRC. This will not get you the full monte out of D2. It peaks in toughness at 60. With premium tool steels you need to optimize the properties. There is no point in going with the high dollar stuff if you settle for less.

thanks for the replies. I will give paul a shot.. Joe, That sounds like a good idea.. If we could decide on a steel It may be worth it to work together on this..

Am I following the PDF correctly in that it says that it will run you $14 per blade for H/T? Other than the 'up to 20' part, at $70 for the batch? So one blade at $14, two for $28, or $70 for anywhere from 5 - 20, all inclusive? Might just have to finish all of my D2 blades before I have any one of them done!

Even though TKS is only about a half-hour from me, It's not going to take long before Paul's prices make me think long and hard about who to send them to.

Also, anyone know a good person for A2 and O6 heat treating?

Thanks much!

Best,

Darryl

D'Holder is more economical than Paul Bos for small batches or single blades. Both do an excellent job, and both are highly recommended.

I can now speak with authority about the job that Paul Bos does. I sent 15 blades in last week Monday on 11-5 and I just got them back yesterday 11-15. That was a quicker turn around than I expected and the blades turned out great. They did not change dimensionally and are as straight as when I sent them. Paul provided fast, no nonsense service. I will not hesitate to use his service again or recommend his service to others.
