I plan on buying the the hsu jian (30 in) part for practice and also for home defense. I am not sure if it comes sharpened. also considering the practical katana plus. somebody let me know if i am wasting my money. Only jians or tachis though I have no training with anything else 150 to 200 is my budget.

If memory serves correctly, they come blunt but with a thin bevel. Solidly built, but I'd go with their new Cutting Jian. A quick search shows it turning up for around $242, which isn't much more than your budget, and it's made with cutting expressly in mind.
