Hi, All:

Anyone got any details/first hand experience/own the Paul Chen Practical Viiking sword? The lit I've read on it says its tempered and all that, but that it has a blunted edge or some such. Anybody know if you can get this economically priced viking-style sword sharp, or can it be sharpened?

Hi,

I have one of these that I bought as a sparring partner for my a&am viking. So far this sword has suffered terrible abuse, both verbal and visual. Firstly its my a&am's B**ch. Its slaps its bendy blade around. The PV is ok as it hasnt suffered to much edge damage at all, in fact the A&am has injured itself more giving the PV a beating. Also the PV has a real girly hand grip. Its way to small for my hands so I had to cover the entire handle, leather and all with some good leather golf grip. Fits me fine now. The sword is a blunt, ie designed as a user sword and therfore the edge geometry is not suited to sharpening. It could be sharpened but would look all wrong without a good bit of blade re-shaping. The fittings are stainless so its gets mocked as the blade is a proper-order grey-ish brown at the moment (came all shiny) and the fittings are all shiny. Kinda comical. The fuller is wide and deep but not perfect although the fittings are tight. The tri-lobe is welded on to the pommell and the weld isnt finished all that well but it does the trick. The blade is really light and handles really really well, too well in fact, I dont really like it. Its like an extension of me and not a viking bludgeoning device. No viking would carry it, tis a girls sword...Now the a&am, thats a mans sword, doesnt flex a lot, the practical flexes like a gymnast. The Practical returns to true much better as well, but then again U ever see a viking doing a cartwheel?

Anyways hope that paints an adequate picture.

Practial vikinng sounds practically useless. Sounds a bit wimpy, but you get what you pay for... by a&am do you mean Christoper Poor's outfit in Minnnesota, Arms & Armor?

If so, I too have his Shifford Viking and like it very much. Oh, well. I'll keep loooking.

Thanks!

Naw, A&A is arms and armor the american crowd, nice stuff.

A&Am is arms and armour manufacture, the czech crowd. theironarms is the amreican distrubuter for them.

What do you want in the sword? My practical viking for all I call it a B**ch and slap it around is far from wimpy. Its been severly abused and has held up real well. It does pretty much exactly what it says on the tin. Yes its light and bendy with low quality parts but if you want a sparring sword thats gonna get used then its the only way to go. I can buy 2 of these for what I paid for my A&AM.

ANy of the czech crowd go decent viking swords that can be sharpened but one thing Ive learned is that swords made blunt and sword made sharp are made differently, different blade profiles and all that. I have never seen a blunt bar a del tin that would look anyway ok by sharpening it. Lutel and baliff forge (two examples off the top of my head)can do it either way but you need to tell them it first as the whole process is different for making blunts and sharps.

If you want a cutter, buy a sharp, if you want a blunt buy a blunt, if you want an inbetween buy a del tin.

Just my 2 cents

That's great, but a question still remains:

Anybody know where one can get an economically priced viking-style sword, sharp?

Much Thanks
