That's right - come out from them there shadows!

Cause I WANT TO THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know for sure that this Thread of thanks will come as NO surprise, to call out a couple of Traditionals finest members, Paul Hilborn and Jack Black.

Guys, I want to take a few minutes and thank you, Traditionals seems to be THE MOST decent place of fine folk who genuinely care, and form great friendships that are solid and true, and these two guys Paul - Jack I am real proud to say are my friends.

Mr. Paul Hilborn.

Not friends because we keep sending knives / stuff to each other - the monetary thing doesn't come into it at all, it's something that is just part of being in a knife loving community, its also because of the special thing that goes further, friends who think of each other-send something ( in our case a knife or so ) with the thought of our mate just beaming upon receiving the package that is usually sent half-way around the World!

Can I share a few photos of the knives I received from these two very special Gentleman we share this space with? I start with Paul as I received his parcel first, and with the greatest apologies for being so extremely late in thanking you my good friend - its been an awfully busy time.

Paul sent me these simply beautifully outstanding old knives that have left me feeling way past the humbled man.... things - small things, mean an awful lot to me, and when a avalanche like this hits you - you just don't know what to do - please allow me to try and begin to start....

Paul and I have a chat now and then on the phone, I curse only one thing with our friendship - and that is the vast distance between us.

Here are some very fine, beautifully aged knives that I guess everyone knows I love, the worn Bone that has such a special, warm inviting feeling that just beckons you to thumb the magnificent Bone before slipping that Grand old knife in your pocket knowing that the knife is older than yourself, having served it's previous owners whom felt the same about this wondrous tool.

After all this time the old knife still has a lot more to give, and once my hands finally let go of the knife - will give that same service to the new and hopefully educated caring owner who appreciates the old knife for silly little things like the fantastic golden Hue that Ebbs from that old worn Bone, down to the old Carbon blade that tells it tales by its colour and gentle curves that pull away from a once straight lines.

...well my friends, here are some beautiful examples that now have place in my collection, until one day my girls will be there going through my collection following my wishes as to where my loved knives will begin their new journey......

New York Knife Co Walden, the main stamped Hammer Brand, the walk and talk is simply superb! That Bone really captures me-sorry for the terrible photos as they do the knife NO justice

Oh Man..this Utica...just look at it, what a beautiful knife - Barlows - and old Barlows at that with their worn long Bolsters and Bone such as the N/Y and this Utica is what collecting is all about

Last and totally far from least, just check out this stunning old KA-Bar Barlow - it was weird timing as our friend Medi-showed his Grand-pas Ka-Bar, and while this knife was over the water - a very special person gifted Medi a New conditioned Ka-Bar Barlow, Paul and I spoke about this - we both have a sneaky suspicion who this fantastic fellow is who gifted Medi his lovely knife -I know what he feels like....not only the knife but with all of its original packaging and Papers....Paul, I find words have no meaning when trying to thank you....

Wow....

Here they are with another old Barlow that arrived around the same time....

Thank you Paul, I truly look forward to greeting you and Nanc in person - that indeed will be a fantastic day...

Calling out Mr. Jack Black....

Yep, good ol Jack, ever since Jack came here to Traditionals - he very quickly stood out as a great guy, extremely passionate about the knives and Sheffileds History.
Sue and I had the FANTASTIC pleasure of meeting Jack, and I can honestly say that I will never let Jack slip my mind, I will never forget the great day that Jack took out and went so so much out of his way to show Sue and I around, and what a great day it was - Jack is the ultimate tour guide put so much soul in my and Sues special day - and to top it off we had the fantastic meeting with the one and only Mr. Stan Shaw.
Well Jack and I keep in touch - mainly because Jack is so good with communication - I enjoy this fantastic fellow, the world is such a better place with Jack in it.
Jack sent me a parcel ( one of his many that he has to me ) that was again full of Jacks extremely thoughtfulness the two lovely old knives this package contained sat me back saying "wow".... speaking of beautiful old Knives that have served long and well, Jack was able to let go of a John Watts Sleeveboard - now there something that stirs you when you hold such an old knife like this-the worn Bone, and the even more worn Blade still performs for you - if you don't get it? well...then I guess I have made a complete fool of myself trying to explain just what these beautiful knives do to me - so forgive me.

John Watts Sleeveboard... ( take some time and check out the lovely huge nail nicks....

Jack, Sue and myself had the great pleasure of meeting Stan, since then my eyes scan a few places for the Cutler "Ibberson", well I hadn't had the chance to pick one up - the famous Tang stamp of the Violin - well Jack took care of that for me sending this Lobster Knife, made by G Ibberson & Co, this knife still has great walk and talk - and has such a healthy "snap", the Bottle knife opener has the words " Crown cork opener " stamped above - this is a very cool little knife - Jack Sir...Thank you for sending me these fantastic knives...the John Watts sleeps tonight in a bath of Mineral Oil !....
Here is one of Mr Stan Shaws old workplaces knife...

How cool..... I Love the old Stovepipe Kick....

Jack my friend, thank you once again, our Penny awaits its next journey.

I get you Duncan and no fools made here! You speak with passion of friendship, camaraderie, artful skill, legacy, true meaning in life. I salute these fine gentleman and that includes you sir! And yes the world is a better place with you, fine human beings, in it.

Now, as I sit here with my morning cup of Joe, I will contemplate these beautiful knives, their existential meanings and art brought into being made everlasting by your passages:D

Duncan, Paul, Jack - I salute you all. You folks are at the core of why we all hang around here!
Passion for the collecting, sure, but the friendship and camaraderie most of all!
No one expresses it better than you Duncan!
May you all go on forever!

And that's what it is all about. Thanks for sharing.

A huge atta-boy to both Paul and Jack! The outstanding thoughtfulness in such gifts is very touching. Beautiful knives and I find it fascinating to just sit and look at such amazing old and worn beauties of yesteryear.

Every time I read of such gestures it's so touching to see the level of comradarie we have here in this forum.

What Charlie said. I could not put it any better!

Those are some beautiful knives. I continue to be stunned by the generosity of folks on this forum, in many cases sending others knives on a whim, just because of a simple post about this or that.

Such a great group of people, that seem like they would literally give you the shirt off their back if they knew you needed it. I am proud to be associated with you all...

Hi folks,

It's an honour to be mentioned in such fine company, and an honour to BE in such fine company here. Both Duncan and Paul are dear friends, just like many of you here. Duncan, those Barlows are stunning, another example of Paul's thoughtfulness and generosity. Great photographs too my friend. Thanks for your kind words, and everyone else too of course.

Jack

Duncan, my friend you speak with such heart, passion and emotion that quite simply I'm left speechless which is pretty rare---ask Nanc :p

In our phone calls we speak of all the great members here, Jack, Charlie, Gev, Pete, Peter, Andi, Andy, Kris, Derek, Bob, Paul, Jake, Stephen, Erik, Eric, Steve A, John, Jon, Sam, Chris, Todd, Jeff/Jeff's, Duane, Doug (haven't seen Doug on here in way to long) Perry, Barry, Brad, Sarah, Carl, Blaine, Zach, Thom, Mack, Ted/Ted's, Ed/Ed's and I apologize to those friends I'm sure I've forgotten to list as there are sooooo many!!!

I want everyone to know that Duncan and his daughter went shopping and sent gifts our way for my wife Nanc, sons Beau and Gage as well as myself. I mean very thoughtful heartfelt gifts to that reflect the great paradise of New Zealand. I was awestruck but Nanc was brought to tears as she was so struck by one man and his family's kindness.

It's been said so often here and shown on a day to day basis the kind, thoughtful people that make the Traditional forum so special. What a great passion we all share for traditional pocket knives and fixed blades---a window to the past that creates such a promising future.

I am so thankful to be able to visit here on an almost daily basis.

I'll never be able to out "Thank" Duncan ;):D They simply come no better than you Duncan. Your passion for knives and those that are gifted solidifies that they are with the best person to preserve their history ;)

Oops, guess I better get in line! ;)

My favorite kind of thread.
You three gents do the forum proud.

Duncan, those kabar Barlow knives are sure something, aren't they? The box and papers really make it even cooler.

The knives are why we come, the people are why we stay.

Those are a bunch of great knives! I think the first one is especially appropriate, since it looks like it makes both an N and a Z.

Paul and Jack are great gents indeed! This place is full of class acts like them and Duncan. Its one of the reasons I stick around even though I am trying to not buy many knives these days. I have been generously gifted a knife by Paul in the past for no reason other than his kindness. It gets used often and it puts a smile on my face every time I use it. Have had a few great conversations with Mr. Jack and his postings always brighten my day as well as reading of Duncans great knives and stories. This place has made me a better person, picking up knowledge everywhere I turn. I have learned like most things that knife collecting/using/hobby is an ever evolving journy. Patience is just one of the many things im really learning hanging around here on the porch. This place is full of great role models and mentors, I appreciate everyones contributions and look forward to many more lessons :)
