A while back I showed you'll a sketch of the knife Paul Jarvis was planning on making for me. Well yesterday I received an email with a picture of the finished knife.
The specs are: 8 inch Damascus blade with Bonji characters and fullers on both sides of the blade. German silver guard with silver habaki and bronze seppa. Grooved fossilized Stellar Seacow handle with garnets set in silver. Blackened bronze handle parts. Overall length 13 inches.

I will take possession of this one at the SICAC in Paris in a months time thanks to Scott Slobodian who is bringing it along with him for me.

Paul is a really talented maker with a style that you know is his.

that's a weird looking knife:) Lots of strange stuff going on there.

Nice score Marcel. Beatiful materials, great workmanship. Something to look out to! Personally I don't really like the guard area and the transition guard-blade.

Have fun on SICAC!

Kind regards,

Jos

I love to see knives go from design on paper to completed piece. Thanks for sharing both.
This is quite an art piece.
How much do you usually participate in the design of your knives?

I have marveled at Pauls work for many years. I suspect this piece has way more quality art than any picture can capture. Every part on it is unconventional. The double/single fullers and pierced carved guard are not your everyday or easily accomplished. An amaizing dagger to say the least. I wish we could see both sides of that blade.

Thanks guys for the compliments and responses.......good and bad.

Lorien, please explain what you mean. I ask this because there is nothing weird about this knife. It is the style for which Paul is known and well known to say the least. You may like it or not...that is just personal taste...but weird???

Kevin, my influence depends on the maker. Normally we talk about and discuss my likes and dislikes regarding materials, finishes and styles. For the rest I try to stay out of the creative proces as much as possible. This because my experience is that when you leave the maker "alone" the better the result. What I do hope to achieve on certain occassions is to push the envelop of that maker so he makes something he never did before.

Congratulations Marcel. I'm sure holding that knife is very different than looking at a picure of it. Paul does amazing work and he is always a pleasure to chat with. He is an amazingly talented person and willingly explains any detail of his art that you ask him about. I always enjoy talking to him and admiring his knives/swords.

Lorien, you mentioned that you have recently picked up one of Dr. Darom's books. If you get a chance, take a look at the section in Modern Fixed Blade Knives. That will give you a better idea of Paul's work. One of my favorites, is his "Genghis Khan" knife/short sword which was pictured in "The Great Collections", another of Dr. Daroms books.

Typical of Paul Jarvis' amazing (AND SELF TAUGHT!!) knife art. Great
piece from a world class knifemaker who makes less than half a dozen
knives a year...

By the way, Marcel, the pdf files on the Web of several sections from
my book "Custom Fixed-Blade Knives" are on my distributor's USA Website...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)
