Does any one know if paul knives are still available through gerber or is it now benchmade? I am interested in the protector series....

The Gerber Paul knives are loooooooooooooong gone. You can still find them from time to time on the secondary market. I am not sure about Paul knives from Benchmade. There is a Benchmade sub forum on here, you can ask over there. Welcome to the forum and good luck finding the Paul knife you want.

Paul knives were made first by Gerber in two editions. They were then out of production for awhile until Lone Wolf started making knives with the Paul lock. They made a fair number of different models with the Paul lock for about 6 years. They fell on hard times and were bought out by Benchmade about 2010. Benchmade made two knives with a Paul lock (called the Defender by Lone Wolf, Blade Winner of 2010) for about a year. There is no longer a knife with a Paul lock in production.

If you buy one, buy an older one made by Gerber. I was not impressed with the black plastic handled models.

The Lone Wolf versions come in many different handle types, none of which are plastic, as far as I know. Unless G10 or micarta is plastic. Sante Fe Stoneworks and Yellowhorse both had versions out with custom handles. I have a Defender in black G10 and like it.

G-10 or micarta are composite materials. As is carbon fiber and graphite/epoxy. In the aviation world, so is plastic. Six-of-one, half-dozen-of-the-other.
But I dislike plastic as well. Don't like FRN either.

I'm talking about the series II model 2 by Gerber. I probably should have returned it.
I've had slip joints that were easier to open.

I bought one for my wife back in the 70s and she never carried or used it. Now I wish I'd asked for it back when we separated.
