Hi Friends,

I haven't been in the Sheaths & Such forum for a while. I noticed in Paul's (Sheathmaker's) sig he has a couple of DVDs out.

  • Basic Pouch Sheaths by Paul Long
  • Advanced Blade Sheaths by Paul Long
Fantastic! I watched a couple of brief PR clips about them on Chris Crawford's site and have a question. One of the clips shows Paul stitching a sheath together with a machine.

I therefore wonder how germane the DVDs are for someone who doesn't have a stitching machine? Thanks in advance for your feedback!

All the best, Phil

Phil, I can give you first hand knowledge of the content.;) Everything regarding stitching in the DVD other than some verbal references and comments is done and demonstrated using the machines.

I have had phone calls and emails from people who bought the DVDs and who hand stitch only and their comments have thus far all been extremely favorable.

I would also be more than interested in any feed back that is generated here. Thanks

Paul

Thanks for the feedback Paul. I often longed for a DVD(s) from you. I too would love to hear from hand-stitching folks who worked through regarding this. What is your opinion of the matter? If you were stitching the sheaths you demo in your DVDs by hand, would you do all the other steps you demo the same way or would change up any of it?

Phil if I was stitching by hand my procedure and sequence would still be pretty much exactly as it was demonstrated on the DVD. There is an area where I might omit the stitching completely as it is mostly cosmetic and doesn't do much other than look nice. That would be the secondary stitch line beneath the lining "roll"which is present on all my sheaths now. Pretty much enhances the look of the sheath, and that's about it.

I've got to get these DVDs some time soon... I thoroughly enjoyed Chuck's DVDs, and learned a lot from them.

Shop layout, tools, type selection and use, leather types selection and how to cut, pattern making, (this alone is worth getting the vid.) sequence of operations, stamping, casing, assembly, finishing, plus all kinds of tips from a master that you see done first hand as he explains each step.

I just watched it for the second time, and those are the thoughts that came to mind, much more to absorb, like edge finishing. It also inspires me to do more. It's like he invited you over to his shop for a day to get a lesson in leather work.

In reference to basic pouch sheaths

I'm a rank beginner and have been stitching by hand. For what it's worth, I don't think the value of Paul's DVD's depends at all on the method of stitching used.

Those DVD's are by far the best money I've spent on my new hobby. As mentioned above, they cover a lot of ground very well. There's also a lot there to see that would be hard to put into words, including a good look at the level of skill I can at least work toward.

Dave

PS - I'm not sure I'd ever get back on the same learning curve if I didn't have those DVD's.

I watched Chuck's DVDs over and over (and even slept while they were on to stimulate my subconscious :) ). My 2nd and 3rd sheaths were apparently good enough that I had several people on another forum wanting me to do sheaths for their knives! That's how much I picked up from just religiously watching those DVDs...imagine what I'll gain from Paul's....

Check this out. These are my first 3 sheaths.

#1...was too excited to wait for my heavy leather to get in, so I got a piece of 3/4oz to practice with.

The amount of information these DVDs contain is enormous! Talfuchre was right, they do cut a HUGE amount of time from your learning curve!

Phil, ABS Mastersmith Terry Vandeventer makes Paul Long influenced sheaths, and he completely hand stiches, and his sheaths look fantastic!
I own, and have viewed both of Paul's videos and they make a fantastic addition to a serious leathercrafter's library!Any and all of the techniques demonstrated can by used by those that handstich.

Thanks for putting these together Paul, we have been day deaming about just such a resource from you. We're getting ours off Amazon because they are so kind about shipping USPS to remote AK.

Where may be download films of chriscrawfordknives.com studio? I can not purchase them...

Pauls DVDs, and his most generous willingness to guide us newbies along, are invaluable. Mit enabled a complete noob as myself to put out something reasonable first time out. I plan to watch, and learn again. Oh, I am still hand stitching.

IvnF, Contact Chris Crawford through his web site. The url is listed below in my signature line. He may be able to work something out to get them to you. As far as I know there is no downloadable format. They are all in English, so that might be a problem for you?

Good Luck!

Paul

Ya know, a downloadable format, like movies are now for instance is not a bad idea! Digital books and such are a big business these days.

I could see that being a huge thing if he could set it up.

Everybody who stitches leather needs three resources in their library. Paul's DVDs, Chucks DVD's and Al Stohlman's book. If you can't put something together with those guys in your corner it might be time to consider a different hobby.
