Paul's Hatchet vs. BAtac or Tankbuster or other smallish hardcore knife.

I have a Paul's Hatchet, which I bought a while ago as a user, and it works well, but I've never really been able to warm up to it.
I've found my BAtac or AD does any job just as well and they are easier to carry.
I'm curious if other people feel this way or maybe someone can tell me what the advantages of using a Hatchet over a small(ish) knife like that might be.
thanks.

I think the only real advantage is chopping. The PH will out chop either of these knives a hundred to one. Oh and looks. The PH is BADA$$!!

It wont out chop a choiless tank buster. Even though the tank buster has more metal in its handle compared to the shsj handle it's longer with a tall thick blade with a 3/4 saber grind that terminates in a *thick* edge. It is a heavy knife that lives up to the name tank. It will do more than the hatchet in the carving and wood shaving department because it has more versatile solid grips. Its handle is also way more substantial than the older shsj handle. I was always dissapointed with the pauls hatchet, I wanted more weight in the head, a longer edge, and a better more substantial less slippery grip.

the tank buster Is however heavy. Like really heavy. If you want to pare back the footprint and weight try the boss jack. It improves the shsj handle by making the index finger position taller. A small and subtle change with dramatic effects. Because the boss handle is slimmer than the tac handles it also keeps the blade heavy balance of the tank buster, maintaining a chopper feel.

With a hatchet you get more leverage on a swing, other than that it's personal preference. Not everyone has to like the same "stuff". If you don't like it, pass it on. Lots of people are after PH's, myself included.

My Pauls Hatchet stays with my hunting gear and gets used to get through sternum and pelvis when skinning. Everyone has different taste but I have found a good place for mine and it suits me fine.

That is exactly what I have always pictured it excelling at. I would probably migrate it into the kitchen whenever I had to break down a big rack of ribs or something, if I had one of course.

wait a minute, busse made a hatchet? lesserbeing if you could get us some pic's of this critter it would be awesome.

I hear the PH is great for pruning fruit trees :)

Here's one for size comparison.

The pauls hatchet is much smaller than it seems in pictures of it by itself, or of it next to much smaller knives. It's similar in length to the pub defender, which is slightly longer than an AD but still much smaller than something like the BJ or TB:

It's not in the same size catagory as the tank buster:

I owned these the two during different times so I don't have any direct comparison images. when I had the pauls hatchet I felt it was too small and hot heavy enough to be considered a chopper, but it's edge length wasn't long enough to be considered knife-like, I saw no reason to carry it over a heavy knife like the tank buster. I got the tank buster and felt it was a little to big, too heavy, too thick. It wasn't as long as a B9 or as compact and carryable as the BJ, but certainly it outranked the pauls hatchet in chopping ability. It's just much, much bigger.
