Hello, guys,

Could you tell me what do you think about Paul's Ratchet against other smatchets or axes? It seems to me there is quite a choice of good quality smatchets and axes for the price of Paul's Ratchet. I was thinking particularly about Roselli and Gränsfors.
Regards,

I would describe the Paul's Hatchet as more of a big-game skinning/butchering tool than a wood-working implement. Sure, it'll chop wood if it has to, but it's real niche is as a tool than can be used to skin, to chop through the pelvic girdle, field-dress, etc. on large game. I would compare it to something like the Uluchet (except with far better construction and a better steel).

My PH from Busse was a cool little tool.... but not nearly as handy and useful as a knife: Too light to chop wood effectively, too cumbersome to work with on anything from elk on down.

I think it'd make a dandy pruner / limber, which if memory serves was its original purpose.

As much as I like the Busse line..... there are better ways to go for hunting / wilderness purposes than either of the Busse / Swamprat hatchets.

I agree with Andrew, The Swamp Ratchet is a great little tool, but if your looking to work with wood (Chopping, carving) you should go with a Gränsfors mini. Its by far the best little hatchet I have ever owned, and its comes razor sharp.

We passed around a ratchet a year or so ago. It's too light for chopping. I can't comment or ot's skinning effectiveness.

Ask and ye shall receive. :)

When mine gets here, I'm thinking of making it my SAR "Smack things with" tool, to knock things out of my way and chop up what needs chopping. If it's anything like my other SR stuff, it'll be more than enough for the job. .
