I recently purchased a Paul's Hatchet with the black crinkle coating and cord wrapped handles and decided to modify it some to suit my needs. The original grind though strong was too thick for chopping anything thicker than 2-3 inches in diameter. I tried chopping a 2X4 and gave up after about 20-30 chops.

The first thing I did was strip the coating and put a rough satin finish on it. Also slimmed the whole thing down to about about .21 or so. Next I slimmed the handle and spine down and added a few more contours to it. Then finally added some black canvas micarta slabs to the handle.

The right side bevel is a slight hollow grind and the left side bevel is convexed down to zero. This makes for a super easy and fast resharpening with sand paper on top of a leather strop. This thing is now razor sharp! Arm hair will now literally jump off instead of just shaving off.

I retried the 2X4 chopping test and ate through it in approximately 60 or so chops using a 3 finger grip. My Busse BIBB can also do it in about 60 or so chops. But the Paul's Hatchet is much shorter and more compact for field carry.

If I remember correctly it will most probably outchop my Gransfor Mini Hatchet and yet still possess the power of INFI!!!! I will do a side by side test as soon as I get some time.

So much for the Paul's Hatchet only being useful for smaller saplings. It will probably give any knife with a less than 7" blade a run for the money and still being much more compact. This is now by far my Favorite Hatchet.
Here are some pics of it.

Great looking job!!! Glad to see that others are adding handles, keep up the good work!

thanks guys!

Grinducci, I will soon give you a run for your money :p hahahaha..... I especially like your straight handle GW mod. That one is really nice.

interesting... now you got me wondering how hard it would be to bolt on an extension handle onto one of those...

Putting on a longer handle is a good idea to make it a more effective chopper yet still light weight. It probably would not be that hard to do. Can probably use two 1/2" thick slabs for the handle and then removing about 1/8"+ of material from the area where the original handle would be attached. The only problem with using 2 slabs of handle material is that you will probably have to pin the slabs along the handle extension to keep them together.

I might try this as a next project. Anyone has another Paul's Hatchet for sale?
