The knife in the pic is 5" long.

The track was seen along a county road in central KS. The biggest dog in the area is my brother's lab, who is big, but not that big!

This is a very rural area, so not too many people around.

I thought initially it was a cougar print, but the track has lots of canine characteristics.

If it's a dog, it's a huge dog!

In Kansas. Anything can potentially be found anywhere these days, if only as an escape.

It kind of looks to me like there was a bit of a slide, elongating the track...
Heal pad looks canine to me...

That's a possibility, but there were other tracks which seemed to show the thing was just kind of walking along, no hurry. But the track isn't terribly fresh, so......? Maybe so.

Cataract in the left eye, not totally blind yet.
Wrong again!!!!!!!!!!!!

This cougar is a land pirate and wears an eye-patch only because it is a stickler for protocol and decorum. In fact, when no-one is around, she takes the patch off, because she it affects her depth perception.

But seriously, you can take a tiny ziploc bag of plaster on hikes, then cast the print (or take a picture like you did :D. I am not very skilled at identification :p). I leave it to the pro's too.

Looks like a domestic or not quite feral dog, right front paw at a slow walk. It would be great to see the rest of the prints including stride/gate patterns. You can get a better overalll impression. Thanks for the size reference, though... that helped.

Always hard to make out from a pic, but I don't see any obvious toe nail indents.

My guess would be more feline than cannine (unless you have another clearer picture that shows nail indents).

Kind regards
Mick

There are claw marks. The OA shape is oval which points to canine. The heel pad also screams canine. The two middle toes are larger than the outer, which indicate dog not wolf (all pads are almost the same size) or coyote (yote's middle toes are almost pigeoned in) There are no explosions or pushes of any kind so it was slow moving.

Actually I take that back... there is push on the inside (left) so if I'm right and it is the dog's right front paw, its turning to the right at a slow lope.

But its tough with only one track.

Looks more feline than canine to me. What wild cats are native to KS (besides the Kansas State Wildcats) :) ?

P.S. I posted this before Rick's analysis. His eyes must be better than mine.
