Pawn Shop Buys

Do many of you buy from pawn shops? Recently I have picked up a LM Wave for $25, a Swiss Tool for $20, a Buck 110, Gerber Bolt Action, and a Buck Cross Lock Solitare all for $12 each. By brother has bought a two Spidercos and a Cold Steel folder from pawn shops also. It is also a good place to buy tools, photograpyn equipment, etc. One lesson I have learned is if you see it today, buy it. It will not be there when you go back. Also, frequent several shops often so that you see fresh merchandise and get to know the management. You will find who will deal and who will not. You will also find that one shop will price certain items high and others lower. Each shop is different. My brother is better at spotting good deals on knives but I tend to find more good buys on tools. There is a knack to looking at a pile of junk knives or tools, or cameras, and finding a dirty, but good quality item. In my opinion, pawn shops are worth the trip.

Pawn shops can be good, just don't believe the first price that they give you. Typically they have picked up the item real cheap and have a lot of room to go down below their nominal price. I have also found antique flea markets to have some interesting stuff as well as Goodwill Thrift stores and garage sales. Check Walmart and internet prices are on the item before you pay too much. Unless I am particularly hot for a specific item I try and buy things for 1/10 of list price at garage sales and 1/3 of list price in stores.
