I'm not a huge custom guy, had a few Randalls and some local custom makers over the years.

Stopped at a pawn shop this afternoon and was looking at guns, and lamenting with the clerk about the plethora or Chinese/Pakistani knives they had for sale.

He said to wait a minute, disappeared in the back and returned quickly with a fixed blade knife in a good looking holster.

Price tag read $89, I got it for $65

Any idea on the handle material? Doesnt look like giraffe or mammoth ivory, my initial guesses.

Definitely Herb Derr, that is his signature look. You did really well. Google his name and you can see other examples of his knives and their prices.

Yep, Herb Derr Hunter with an oosik handle and there's no mistaking Herb's Damascus.
Herb makes very nice knives, usually Damascus and always supplies a good looking exotic inlay sheath. In this case Ostrich.
You did well.

Derr all the way. Probably retails around $300-400 would be my guess.

It even says HK Derr. Its not only a signature knife of his, but the same sheath style he always used.

I owned a larger knife of his and paid around $500 if I remember correctly. Very cool looking steel and hes the only one that makes it look that way.

Herb's style and damascus are unique. You can spot his work from across the room. That knife was a steal. Nice job landing it.

Here are a couple of my knives from Herb. You can stare at the patterns in the damascus all day. Don't stare too long of you'll start seeing animals and faces in the steel

I've probably owned a 8-10 of Herb's knives over the years, here's the only one I have a photo of:

I'd love to see how his knives would look if he made them more in the ABS style (full flat grinds, higher ricasso, damascus/metal spacers etc.)

Wow that is a great deal for one of Herb's knives. Even with Herb's negotiating skills there is more money in materials there than what you paid for that knife!!!
