I found this little Plumb at my local pawn shop last Thursday. I put a few hours into it this weekend between assorted house and family projects, and like the results. I decided to accent the "fawn foot".

Hi Elk,

Wow! Nice work. Just today, I found the same Hatchet at a Garage Sale. I wish I had the talent/skill/tools etc. to make my PLUMB as nice as your Hatchet. Tell me, what process do you have to do to get the Hatchet head look the way you've made your PLUMB look ? I only cleaned the Axe head off with a very brief Vinegar bath, Steel wool scrub, wash off and oil. Most of the Red paint on my Hatchet's handle was gone except for a few patches which I removed and just oiled the handle. One the whole, it's a nice lil' Hatchet that I got for a bargain. However, you're re-conditioned PLUMB looks awesome! Enjoy.

Hardball,
I took the paint off the head with a wire wheel on my grinder and then sanded it as smooth as I could, but next time I will do it all with sandpaper, the wheel leaves too deep of marks. I ground off the mushroom on the poll with my grinding wheel and then dressed the top and edges with a file to get it square and clean. I took a little belly out of the cheeks near the cutting edge, then filed a new bevel to a nice sharp edge. That red paint on the handle is tough stuff, it took a fair amount of sanding to get it off. I painted the black stripe on the top to hide some red that was just too much work vs reward, it was easier to cover it up. I thought I would do the "hoof" on the bottom to make it unique and I like how it turned out. I stained the rest of the handle and will put a coat of wax on to finish it off. I am pleased with the outcome, and plan on looking for abandoned heads to build on for each of my 3 adult kids. A few years back I did my own Norlund HB Cruiser that I bought just after graduation from college. The handle finally cracked, I did the same work on it and enjoyed it enough to want to do it again. It's fun to see something returned to it's former glory. I will post a picture of it one of these days.

Hi Elk,

Thank you sir for that information. You did a very nice job (love the Fawn hoove) it's very clever and artistic., I agree, it is a lot of fun returning something to it's former glory. I've only started collecting Axes/Hatches for about four weeks now and have acquired eight-ten Axes. I'm in the process of cleaning. I too have a Norlund "Saddle Cruiser" which is one of my favorites. Thanks again for the "tips" on cleaning/prep. I got to buy sandpaper (and more Steel Wool).

Regards,
HARDBALL
