I was running around aimlessly today and went to a couple of pawn shops where I have had some luck in the past. I found a two dot 110 that looked like it had never been sharpened for $16 and a paperstone Vantage Select (420 steel) that was new for $20.

It's a conspiracy I tell you. :D

LOL!!

A while back I found this one.

Now THAT'S one I'd like to find.

I have a nice Kalinga, but no Akonua yet.......seems like a guy should have one of each, they kind of go together.

:D

Edge,

You see the price? Pawn shop guys very often have no idea what they just bought. This guy doubles the price less a dollar...hence the $39 price.

You're lucky. The pawn shops in my area want full retail price for beater knives.

Always ask a pawn shop what is the least they will take for something. Always!!

Well, ok, maybe if it is a 110 or a 112 and not all destroyed, and has $5 on it... grab it!! :D

I try and beat them down on everything. They are only going to loan/pay 10-15% on an item then want 50-75% of retail for it. Here's a hint, most pawn shops will put a tag on everything that has a date on it. That date is when it came in the shop. The more time that has past since that date means they may be more willing to deal as they want to get rid of it. There's one near me that has a 119 that someone cut the keeper off the sheath that they actually want 69.99 for. It's still there.

I hit 2 pawn shops Thursday when I was in town. One of them had no knives and the other just crazy Dragon knives and some kind of cheap looking Samurai sword.I'm giving up on the ones in my area. Most every thing they have is junk.:barf:

This is the way my pawn shops operate as well . I know how they operate and why . But often they won't budge . So, if its something I really want/hard to find and in decent shape, I'll pay it . I may grumble about it some but pay it as its on my doorstep and I'm thinking when can I find another one in better shape or better price . Usually a 2 dot in decent shape with sheath runs 30$ . DM

Gordon, Your 402 is in great shape . It looks to be a year date as the guard and the birch wood models came out in late 1981 . Still, for that price I would have pulled out my wallet . That model is my most favorite Buck sheath knife espically in the time frame as JK's 401 . A great model that has most everything I like . Thanks for posting the photo . DM

We have one pawn shop in town that is good. They get some decent stuff in, and its usually priced good.
The other one is completely whacked out. I haven't been back into it for a couple years

I was in one pawn shop that gets some good knives in. I saw a big yellow buck box with a $99 price tag. I asked to see the box and in it was a 110 in a nylon sheath! Even with their sale of 50% on knives, I think $50 for a $25 Wal-Mart knife is a little steep.

Yeah........ignorance works both ways.

Some price'em too low........and some price'em too high.

We just have to nail the former and smile at the latter as we walk out.

You never know.......next week they may be ignorant in the right direction.

:D

Chad, Here the Wally 110's go for 33$ out the door . If I saw a 110 in the box at one of my pawn shops and it had the leather sheath and looked new for 50$ . I would have been interested and talked to them about it . But not in the configuration you mention . DM

I got no pawn shops anywhere near me:( at least without fighting traffic into downtown Pittsburgh.

It seems that some pawnshops subscribe to the old P.T. Barnum addage that there is a sucker born evey minute. There is one near me that has a Ed Gillette Buck that he's got 39.00 on that I figure since it's been there for 3-6 months, I should be able to get him down to 25.00 for it, (yes it has the sheath).

I've gotten some really good knives there cheap but lately it seems to be overpriced Chinese junk and the Wal*Mart Buck.

I like to stop and look in any pawn shop I go by... Different thing come out for sale everyday... I'll tell you how I do it, but don't tell NO ONE! ! ! If you get to know the owner or the workers in your pawn shop... Sometime if ask them if they have any Buck Knives or Knives coming up for sale they will let you know... Some will take your phone number and call you... It works for me anyway... Now a lot of pawn shops are selling on ebay and that sucks for all us... So anyway don't give up on your pawn shop just because they have china knives one week... something nice could come out next week... ITE ... ;)

Very true. A good friend was a manager of a big pawn shop, in the town I use to live.

He ran the business different than most. Each department had a "specialist".
The jewelry section even had a highly respected Gemologist. At the same time, he tried to teach everyone that worked there, a little about everything.

When he decided to start listing some stuff online, he would put the research into items, so he knew what it was worth. They would give an item about a month in store, and if it didn't draw any interest, it went online.
Some stuff e-bay, some stuff GunBroker. A person could still make a good buy in store, especially if they didn't come into the store with a crappy attitude.

Being a friend, I always got first shot at anything he thought I might be interested in, and at a really good price

Gee, sounds like the one I can usually "beat" down on a price.
