I got two killer deals on knives past couple years, I got a Cold Steel Master Tanto San Mai III for $50.00, and a Spyderco Endura SS Handle for $20.00.

Like an idiot I sold the Master Tanto, but I really used that thing and got $200 for it.

Earlier this year in a moment of weakness, I was heading to a job interview after my unemployment ran out, and I ran out of Gas on the highway, so I walked to a Pawn shop that was pretty close to temporarily pawn my Cold Steel Recon Tanto, had almost no use into it except some packing tape, they would not take it.
The broker told me they only take high-quality American knives, I looked at their display case and it was full of "Winchesters", "S&W's", and two pretty beat up "SOGs". Lol!!

I saw some old rough Compound bows there, I asked if they ever get Recurves, the broker said that Recurves have no value, and turns them away all the time so I gave him my # and asked if he could call me anytime a Recurve walks into the shop. ;)

He must have meant that "we only carry low quality knives made in China with names of American companies on them." Lol

I just got a Socom Delta for $175 from a pawn shop. Not cheap for a knife, but a steal for a $290 knife.

That's why its best to be on the smart end ( The Buying End ) than the selling end, ESPECIALLY with Pawn Shops. Most pawn shops have people that think they are experts concerning guns and knives. So let them rant on, and always be on the lookout for the (rather common) hidden gem. Its not rare to find $100 + knives in pawn shops selling for pennies. I bought a couple (Brand New) pockets knives here at a local pawn shop once, one was a Stag Bulldog Brand fullsize Trapper, and a Yellow Comp Buck Creek Trapper for $10 each. Lets jus say I was addicted to going to that pawn shop about once or twice a week after that. Then it got bulldozed to make room for a mini mall lol.

Moral of this thread----- Pawn shops run buy non-knife people are priceless :) Funny how they always jack up the price of guns tho. never understood that. (My experiences with pawn shops anyway)

I always mean to stop in some just to browse and hopefully get lucky. I never do though.

I know one pawn-shop owner who also owns about one-half of the downtown real-estate. Dumb like a fox.

One of the pawnshops near me had a 90$ sticker price on a used tenacious, and they were trying to get 120 for a dragonfly. It was kinda funny

My best deal was a Benchmade AFO for 39.99 and I managed to talk them down to 35.00 cash. Same place had a Frost Cutlery Ka-Bar next gen knock off for 59.99.

A few months ago a guy i know had mentioned a specific pawn shop and said they sold all sorts of knives there. So I was in the neighborhood one day and figured I would stop in and see what was available. They had a couple Kershaw Leeks and the rest was nothing more than a pile of CCC pot metal stamped fixed blades with the multicolored dymond wood handles. They also had a couple of firearms, a Glock 17 for $700+. No thanks.

I've never yet found one of these mythical "super awesome knives for stupid cheap because of the owner not knowing what he's got" pawn shops, and hell, part of my job up until about a year ago was traveling to many different military posts in the country. I've perused pawn shops outside of posts from Seattle to North Carolina, and it's always the same stuff: a shelf full of beaten Gerbers and rusty Leatherman/Gerber multi-tools (with maybe a few cheap Kershaws sprinkled in for spice) under glass all with astronomical price tags. I've also done "pawn shop days" with the wife in multiple towns here in Florida with the same result. I'm guessing it's a rarity in the days of the internet on any device with a battery when a pawn dealer will just pull up Ebay on his phone on the spot to see what something is worth (I've seen it done when people were bringing stuff into shops I was at).

Now a days yeah....

Awhile back, like 20 years years one could find some good stuff..

Around Military bases are the worst and mostly garbage..... Although sometimes they have some nice guns....

All the guns I've seen are either beaten up (or obscenely tacticooled out) AR-15s* or Glock pistols (with the occasional S&W bottomfeeder thrown in for good measure). LOL

*"Excuse me good sir, I seem to be misreading that price tag. Are you actually charging $2,300 for that piece of sh!t busted looking Bushmaster with what appears to be a Tasco scope on it???!?" "Uuuhhhhyessir, yess'r I aim!"

I said sometimes.... ;)

But yeah I have seen some insane prices... And I just laugh at them and say yeah right at that 3X what the piece is really worth price.....

Once and a while you can find something worthwhile. A year or so ago I picked up a Benchmade Rukus that was used but not beat up for $40. Not the best deal ever but pretty cheap.

And see, I could understand if that price was actually supposed to be a starting point for a haggling session, but when I've inquired at some of the pawn dealers around here; it's always crossed arms and "Ahhyeahup, thass tha pryce!" My usual response is "Well, good luck with that. I'll be back in six months and we can revisit this discussion." I actually bought a Kahr CW40 that way. Guy wanted $750 for it. I gave him that exact line, and several months later, he was more than happy to let it go for $250 when I happened to stop back in there. LOL

I don't haggle..... ;)

The best ones are usually really Gun Shops that also trade etc, that way they also sell new guns so the prices are more inline with what they should be on the used stuff.

I have never seen a pawn shop offer to sell a knife, used or otherwise for less than MSRP; the same with handguns...a local shop had a gently used Colt 1991 "Billboard" for $1800.

I've frequently found good deals on sharp, pointy objects in pawn shops. Even as little as 5 years ago, good deals were to be had at almost any pawn shop.

Lately though, the managers have gotten more savvy when taking it an item to check what the item in question has sold for on fleabay lately. If it's rare enough that there's been no sales of the item in the last 60 days or so, they have to guess what they will offer for the item. They usually will offer only 20%-30% of an average of the high-low sales.

The price they are asking when it finally shows up in the showcase is routinely double or more what they gave for it. I never offer more than 40% of what they have it listed for. Then the dickering begins. If they take without batting an eye, I know I offered too much and they had bumped the price up to closer to triple what they have in it and make a note in my notebook about that shop for making future offers. If they won't dicker, I mark'em off my list of future stops. Most of'em dicker. Not all, but most.
