Found a GREAT deal this afternoon while pawnshopping with my wife (who was looking for a pair of opera glasses, of all things...)

Anyway, in the knife case, lying amongst lots of Chinese and Pakistani junk, was a zytel Spydie Cricket. I asked to take a look at it. It was in 99.7% condition, but no box or paperwork. I asked how much they wanted for it, and the clerk said $9.00.

I didn't even dicker with her.

Brought it home, Tuff Clothed it (is that a verb?) and sliced a few pieces of paper and magazine insert cards to test the edge. That little beast may be the sharpest knife I have ever held in my hands!

Anyway, I showed it to my wife, whom I am trying to convert to Knife-Knuthood. (I gaver her one of the CF Ladybugs sold thru the BF Store.) She said, "Oh, what a cute little knife! Can I have it?" I was so taken aback, I said "Sure" before I had a chance to think about it.

Guess I'll have to wait for the BF Matriarch - that's more of a man-sized blade anyway...

So, obviously the original owner of the Cricket must have gotten substantially less than $9.00 for it. What in the world could a person need so badly that can be bought for less than $9.00? There's a sad story in there somewhere.

Nothing like a good pawnshop!

I have never been lucky enough to find a decent knife in one but have bought several guns and tools from them.

Hmmm, how many Randalls did I find at those many weekend stoopsales?

This thread brings back a sad, ugly memory. While "browsing" one day through a pawn shop, I saw "THE knife". Looked at it, stared at it, memorized it, left the shop, went to the ATM, withdrew the money, came back, and it was gone. To this day, I don't know who bought the Spyderco Walker C22 for 100 bucks, but I am still heartbroken. Man, that hurt.

Is a Pawnshop Cricket any relation to the "Times Square Cricket"? Hint: readers of children's book may recognize this.

FullerH, that book is one of my favorites, I remember reading it when I was 12 or so. I believe the book is titled "Cricket In Times Square" though.

Thank you, Johnny. I could not remember if the title was that way or the way I put it. My son, to whom I read the book at age 5 or so is now 26, so it has been a long time since I read it.
