i just bought a peanut pattern knife at a pawnshop, and need a little help dating it.
It is marked "MADE IN USA" on the main blade, the pen blade only has "USA".
The blades, bolsters, and liners are carbon steel.
The scales are either black jigged bone or a black plastic.
Both blades have a half stop.
I cannot find a makers name or cartouche. No shield in the handle, and it looks like it never had one.

Could the steel bolstrs be a clue on who made this knife and the general era it was made?

I know pictures would help, but I don't have a way to take or post them right now.

Hmmm....no marks rules out most of the major knife makers. Any patina on the blades?

And yes, without photos we're shooting in the dark.

LOTS of petina (in this case, rust, as well as stains from use) on the blades, bolsters, and liners. There is also a brass liner between the blades. Both blades look to be centered.

Photos would help. A lot of have books that help us identify these knives. It could be very old or on a knock off that's seen a lot of use.

Did the pawn shop have anything to say about it?

Sounds like a Cammilus made knife? If I'm not mistaken they made knives with JUST "USA" as the blade tang mark.

I was thinking maybe Camillus or possibly Schrader, with the plain steel bolsters maybe late '40's early 50's?

Regardless, for "$10" I can't get hurt too bad. I traded my Rough Rider baby sunfish for the knife and a Case belt sheath that fits my Opinel number 8.

I was thinking Imperial made knives around WW2 that only had "USA" on the tang.

I thought maybe it was made in Camillus

Camillus had a brand that was stamped Made in USA, I found one of the camp utility knives at a flea market a couple years ago. Great knife. Be sure to stop by the Cult of the Peanut thread on here, and if you're on Facebook, check out the Cult of the Peanut group on Facebook!
