Just went to message a knife maker on something that caught my eye and we have to pay for the service now? How are we going backwards on services? I guess I am use to free everything on forums, messaging, photos and signatures. I know it has always been limited here but to not be able to message someone paying to sell here is a little backwards.

The rules are what they are. You have to be a paying member to use DMs. Otherwise, you have to work out the particulars of your communications in another manner...email, phone, vendor website etc.
