Got this from a good friend- hunting and fishing partner- that I've made a few knives for in the past. He found this on a dead mountain ash tree up at our hunting shack. Mountain ash doesn't usually get this big around here. Looking forward to cutting into this thing although I'm not really sure what the best way to got about it would be. Sliced off a little piece and it is very interesting inside! Positive proof that those knives we all seem to give away to friends and family have a great way of getting back to us!!:D

Dammit! Sorry y'all. Meant to post this in ShopTalk!! :( Dexter-Help!!!:)

Go find the biggest bandsaw you can and have them slice it up for you- it will save you a lot of time and a lot of wasted wood.

Post a couple pics when you get it cut :)

I spend a lot of time looking over the laps at logging sites. Just amazing what you can find when you look a little. Post pics Richard when you saw it. Should be some beautiful wood in there!

Hey Richard,I have the good fortune to see a very nice maple burl in the bed of a pickup one day and asked the future of the piece. The guy said the fireplace:eek: . I took it from him needless to say.I left it out in the weathe in a shady spot near my house for about a year and a half and it sphalted niceley. i've heard that if you can find some sphalted wood that you can innoculate a fresh piece and speed up the process.Be sure to show us some cross sections.
