Paying It Forward... To Policemen

Alright guys, there has been several paying it forward threads lately. This one is a little different. A fellow forum member and I are in a police program teaching us some skills and lessons about becoming officers. We've both noticed that no one besides us really has any taste in knives, and many use blades that, in my experience are likely to fail on them, and your blade failing on you when you're using it to defend your life or get someone out of a vehicle can be dangerous or deadly and the others in the program and the officers who run it don't deserve that. The other forum member and I are asking for any unused or unwanted blades you have, preferably SAKs or tactical folders. To spice it up some, if we get 10, we'll give away a Gerber Mini-Paraframe, if we get 20, we'll give away a Micro Recon 1 by Cold Steel, if we get 30, we'll give away a Spyderco Manix 2 Lightweight, and if we get 40, we'll give away every one of those. Give aways will consist of a drawing of everyones name who gave and will take place on November 11th. To give just put your email in a reply to this post and specify what you're giving. Anything you can give is appreciated. We'd appreciate it if you're willing to pay for shipping too. If not, we can work it out. Any knives left over from the ones given to the people in the program, will be distributed to the other officers at the station. Thank you and God bless!

So far I have seen you offer three items in the PIF thread, and take many others. I'm sorry, but I doubt your credibility too much to participate. Good luck with your venture.

I apologize for offering only what I did, I really don't have any other blades I'm not using constantly or that aren't extremely sentimental gifts. My collection isn't nearly what i'd like it to be. But this thread isn't about me. Its about officers I look up to. Thank you for your thread and your time Remy. You're a good guy and I'm sorry if you don't think I am.

Why not give the officers your own blades? I'm sure they would very much appreciate that.

By the way, I am not trying to call you out. I am simply stating facts for those who have not followed the other threads. They are, of course, free to make their own judgment calls.

I don't have enough blades to give. That's why my friend and I created this idea. Thanks again Remy for your time and effort in an amazing thread. Sincerely.

To readers of this, as Remy said, you're free to your personal judgement calls. I thank everyone for anything you decide to donate. God bless.

One person trying to collect 20, 30, or even 40 quality folding knives to "donate" has too much potential to go wrong. Police Officers are paid a decent salary, and usually get a stipend in addition to cover equipment costs. If these police officers don't know how to choose a quality knife, maybe you should consider donating your time to educate them. I'm sure you could work something out with command in order to give an in service or class. I don't know you personally, and chances are you are an honest person trying to do a good thing, but IMO this is not very well thought out and you should reconsider this thread.

As a related aside: you need to check with the officers/dept you are intending to give these to to make sure the knives can be carried on duty. Some dept's don't care what their officers carry and some care a great deal. Everything from length to action to how carried.

Not participating, but it may cheer your heart to know that I have gifted the following knives directly to police officers within the past year or so:

Ontario RAT-1 (x3)
Spyderco Native 1
Spyderco Sage 1
Spyderco Persistence
Spyderco Tenacious
Spyderco Kiwi 3
Spyderco Centofante 3
Byrd Cara Cara 2 (x2)
Kershaw Blur
Kershaw Leek
CRKT M16 (x3)
Benchmade Pika 2 titanium
Ka-Bar Kharon Tanto

I work closely with police and have gifted these knives depending on the officers' personality and function within the department. Might have even made a knife-nut or two in the process... :)

Cheers!

-Brett
