Payment for shipping difficulty

I ordered a khukuris from HI early this morning thinking all was well and good, slightly put off by the only postage option for me being USPS as I live in Australia. Figured it would be similar to standard shipping as I saw there were international buyers outside the US but I recieved an email telling me that I would have to contribute the difference to HI warehousing in Reno, was wondering if someone could advise as to whether this is standard practice.

If she says international shipping payment's required, I'd pay the lady's international shipping charge on an international shipment. :)

The main page for HI's online shop has this written in red capital letters:

"IF YOU LIVE OUTSIDE THE USA WHEN YOU ORDER YOU MUST PURCHASE INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING COSTS. Link at left of this page."

If you click on the mentioned link, labeled "International Shipping", it lists the costs for international shipping, with two options.

I live in Australia, I've always paid international shipping costs, yes it sucks that it's so much extra and with the weak Aussie dollar makes things even more expensive, but this is basically the only way to obtain these high quality blades. What I would be curious to know is if I was to order one blade would it be possible to put it into a smaller package than those triangle boxes which always seem to have plenty of left over space, even had 4 khukuri stuffed in there at one time. This could possibly save on shipping costs if I'm not mistaken?

It is standard shipping for international orders. This has been so for many years. Your choices are International Airmail or International Express Airmail

It is a flat rate charge. A smaller package won't make a difference.

Thanks for your replies, I wasn't so much asking if the shipping was standard but rather the email - though I've no doubt it was legitimate from what I'm hearing.

Yes, it's legitimate. Its just notifying you that you forgot to purchase shipping and that it wouldnt ship without it.

Considering the number of spam/scam/phishing emails that people get these days. If SgtPS missed seeing the information when filling out the order form. I certainly applaud him for his smart idea to check here. Since he is new, he probably doesn't know that Auntie runs the show in her very straight forward yet efficient way so I can see why the email in question might be one that someone not used to the situation might question. I am glad he was able to find the answer from Karda here so he knows it is legitimate and even some information about what might have been missed on the original order form that would have helped him avoid the same in the future. :) Welcome to the Sub-forum SgtPS. Stop by once you receive your blade and tell us about it.

I have some Sirus. If your training MMA or something Siru and Kobra both are recommended by HI. Siru is a bit more heavy duty than Kobra and can do plenty of chopping and brush cutting etc. If you want to do more on the chopping side of things id go with something a bit larger than 15". Many love the 15" and 12" as a fighter but they lack the weight for any major chopping power. The 21" and 25" are my favorites because I like the extra reach for brush clearing.

Think I'll get a Kobra that's close to 18". My machete is that long and it feels very comfortable.

I focus on HEMA training btw, I also practice basic unarmed strikes that friends and teachers recommend.

Thanks, it's a beauty to train with as well - can't wait to try the sirupate.

I like the siru, kobra, and chitlangi, for martial arts, but truthfully, I prefer my bashpati the most. I like my BAS for all around usage.
