Quick Question:

I have a customer who is requesting to pay me via Western Union for a blade. Seems a little odd, and I didn't even think that such services still existed.

I've never used Western Union before, and don't have a clue as to how it works or how you actually obtain the money and not get scammed.

Anyone have experience with this?

Western Union is a red flag for a scam

There 's nothing wrong with cash, or postal money orders.

International Postal Money Orders if out of country.

Thanks! International money order it is. Chances are I won't hear from him again.

The emails he sent seemed a bit odd, so I thought something might be up.

I feel special now; people are willing to engage in complex scams to obtain one of my knives!

don't forget the Postal

Scammers can send fake bank MO - the bank may cash it up front, then charge it back to your bank account later after you have already shipped the goods.

International Postal money order = you cash it at the Post office and walk away, no chance of charge backs
Cash it before you ship it, no problems

You can actually have them pay via Credit Card through PayPal... I don't think they even need a paypal account

Don't take international money orders either there is a ton of fakes.

The one secure way is American Express Travelers Checks. They have to go to their American Express Office and buy them. You will be able to verify they are real from AE directly.

The other way is they can pay with a credit card through the PayPal sight. They do not even need an account. They can go to Paypal, click on send money and follow directions.

I didn't know that people could scam with Western Union. I use it all the time to pay for things, but I've never been on the receiving end. When I do it, I have to pay WU up front to get the money order. Eh, learn something new everyday.

western union would be safe since you would go get the money before shipping. he will give you a number to give the agent and then you get your money. i have used it many times in the past but for non knife items.

Western Union does money orders. The only way I accept any money order is like a personal check. I don't ship until it clears my bank which can take up too 10+ days. Now if you are willing to sit and wait till I am sure the money is in the bank, then and only then I will ship to you.
