Paypal and Butterfly Knives

California liberals continue to help you lead a better life, it appears. I closed my PayPal and Ebay accounts this morning because PayPal informed me that I could no longer accept PayPal payments on our web sites. The reason is that they don't like butterfly knives. It is not an "acceptable use" for PayPal. I did a lot of shopping on Ebay and I will miss it but if they don't approve of how I make my living then I have no business supporting their business.

Good for you Fred. They suck anyway. As far as Ebay goes... It looks like they're going to have some competion in the future once Google gets their online auction/trading service going.

Things would be so much easier if ebay/paypal weren't based in Commiefornia.:thumbdn:

Unfortunately, Google is the same way. They won't accept my advertising for the same reason. Guns are now illegal in San Francisco. Can knives be far behind?

Wow, that sucks.

Looks like I will be boycotting Ebay, Paypal, Google. I had no idea they were so ignorant.

Funny... this news sort of makes me want to get a butterfly knife even more.

I doubt that the San Francisco gun ban will stand up in State court. It is States that have legislative power over gun laws, not cities.

eBay seems to allow the listing of balisongs, why then do they not allow the use of Paypal to pay for them?

Boycott Google? That should be a trick. And doesn't this break some kid of fair trade law.

That is simply ridiculous.
Being a native of the silly state I can not all of us are brainwashed pantywaists , we here in the Valley leave that sort of stuff to the Bay Area or LA.
Not saying everyone from those areas are that way but the damn politicans sure are.

Yeah, state laws definitely pre-empt local municipalities. Sorry to hear about the paypal thing. For many people, paypal is the easiest form of payment. Hope your business continues to do well despite this.

Thats complete non-sense. Definitely wish you the best with your business and i dont think i will be using paypal anytime soon just from hearing this. What makes me even more angry is the ignorance these companies show to why they will not be involved in them. I bet if you ask them it will be like all other lefters say..."They are horrible WoMD and are able to hurt people...but you are still allowed to use our site to buy/sell kitchen knives A.K.A the most dangerous knife as statistics go!"

Yes, it will, but it can be done. Google offers great services, but I can use other search engines, other Email services, other map/directions-makers etc...

To get politcal... I hate the slippery slope of gun and knife laws.

Guns and knives can help someone kill people. So can cars. So can sticks. What's next?

How about increasing the punishment for the people that abuse guns and knives rather than punishing innocent people without affecting the criminals at all?

Park Ridge, Ill. banned gun ownership about 30 years ago.

Some states have enacted pre-emptive gun laws that forbid cities to make more restrictive gun laws. Most states have not.

Understand that they aren't just saying they don't want people to pay for butterfly purchases with PayPal. They are saying we can't accept PayPal for anything because we sell butterfly knives on our web site. What they really wanted us to do was to remove the butterfly knives. Instead I just removed PayPal.

Thanks for the kind thoughts. Our business will be fine without PayPal. PayPal represented a few thousand dollars per month in payments and I assume most of those customers still want to make a purchase. They will just pay some other way. If they only want to buy because they can pay with PayPal then I guess I'll lose those customers but I don't expect it will be many.

It is as though they want to stamp out butterfly knives and are willing to lose customers along the way in their effort. I have used Ebay and PayPal as a means to clear out distressed inventory for years. I don't have a total but I'm sure we have used it for six figures worth of sales over the years. I'm sure it is over $40K just this year and it has been $6000 in the last month because the total is still there in "My Ebay." So we are certainly bigger than an average Ebay customer. They must really have a hatred. It boggles the mind a little. It certainly isn't a business decision since we represent a reasonable amount of business to them. It is purely political. If I were a stockholder I'd be livid. I'll never be a stockholder.

With the clout that the NRA has you would think they would get a service going for shooting and related sites.

Screw PP, they are only a service, its not really going to make a difference in the grand scheme of things, but you do what you can I suppose.

Maybe someone could start a "freepal" dedicated to upholding the second amendment and the spread of democracy.

Don't blame California. Blame PayPal and eBay. California's knife laws are not the best but they are better than many others.

PayPal is a nasty, nasty company.

But, if you sell on e-Bay you really can't get along without them. So, I put up with their crap. Maybe something better will come along soon.

It won't harm you TOO much if you are equipped take credit cards on your site, but for those of us who don't want to mess with such stuff ourselves......PayPal is essential.
