A question for you Spyderco gurus: Why do you suppose spyderco abandoned the Paysan? (I know there were complaints about a weak detent, but that should’ve been an easy fix.) I managed to snag a NIB about 8 months ago, and to me, it really checks all the boxes (for a folder). Judging from the demand of Rassenti integrals running easily into four figures, I’d think it’d be a money maker for Spyderco. Any ideas or is there something obvious I’m missing. Bonus points for the Slysz Bowie, although it was re-released through Knife center (?) in limited runs. I got a slightly used one (at a slightly ridiculous price), but they seem easier to find than the Paysan. Maybe things changed since I’ve stopped looking for either one!

I don't think Spyderco "abandoned" the Paysan.

It was always intended as a limited run model, given its high price point, was not expected to sell in much volume and, given the costs of mfg, would not yield Spyderco much profit. Same applies to the Nirvana.

Neither is a suitable candidate for a dealer exclusive because of the cost of mfg, the retail price point, low profit margin and the limited options for creating a unique variation. The only thing they could really change is the blade steel.

I've owned and sold a Paysan because mine had a really annoying lock-stick and because I thought it just looked too plain. I bought a Nirvana instead which does not have either of those problems. I'm good.

If you want an answer from Sal Glesser himself, post a query in the Spyderco forum directed to him (not a PM which he will neither see nor answer) and he may post a response. He's the moderator of the Spyderco forum and sees (even if he does not reply) to everything posted there.
