I've just had a blistering new games PC built for me. It has the nVidia 7900 GTX video card, AMD Athlon 64 x 2 4200+ chip and 2GB RAM.

I also bought the PC game Far Cry.

The problem? Not only does Far Cry not load/play, the PC doesn't even recognise that there's a disc in the drive!

My DVD drive is a Lite-On DVDRW SHM-165P6S.

I understand that there is a compatibility issue with Far Cry and some drives, though mine is too recent to feature on the lists. The issue is the game manufacturers' copy protection system. (Thanks, Krytek! :jerkit: )

I am not a PC expert. Can someone who is point me to the closest thing to a one-click solution?

I'm an enthusiastic gamer too, Maximus, and the various "official" bulletin boards for nearly all games are populated by complaints similar to yours.

I havn't tried this one, but I know it's a resource hog that's used as a benchmarking tool by various testers. I'd go first to the official support board and see if there are similar complaints. Usually the tech support is helpful, often there's a known issue or fix.
Can be very frustrating, I know. I got Red Orchestra (very realistic WWII shooter) months ago, and on first attempt to play the computer crashed. Happened several times.
Turned out to be an incompatibility issue with Zone Alarm. Several months down the pike, ZA has patched their software and now all is fine.

Do you have another computer on a network that will read the discs? If you could somehow acquire images of the cds, you can get a program like daemon tools to mount a virtual drive in Windows. Then you could just go from there. By the way, you can most likely find those images on a torrent. ;) You've bought the game, so it ain't stealing in my eyes. I have Far Cry and it's a great game overall, great graphics, scary at times, just the AI can be dumb.

Quit yer cryin! If you can afford a rig like that, you can swing a modern game instead of a three season old has been :)

Far Cry actually still looks pretty good even though it's a little long in the tooth. I think Quake 4 looks better and is a much better game. Check it out.

The latest Need for Speed will work your graphics rig out pretty well and give you nice eye candy.

Happy gaming!

Well another long time gamer here with problems too often.
Your box is new but maybe the drivers are not, most game makers will tell you in the FAQ's to make sure all your drivers are updated , even as far as updating/flashing the bios (which I do not recommend).
The main drivers you need to worry about are sound and video.
I'm thinking the problem though is in the copy protection , go to a sight like .... nevermind i'll find it for ya ,hmm....... here

Sometimes because of the copy protection there is a conflict with the drive and the game exe thinking too much , I have solved this problem by saving the old EXE in a folder on your desktop and then d/l the cracked EXE and placing it where you took the original one from.
Legality poo..... Who cares , you bought the game , you paid your monies but it aint working so you do what you gotta do.
Now there is a possiblity that the copy you bought is messed up somehow.
I doubt it is your computer.
Lastly if it doesnt work , make sure to get your money back and buy a game that will work.
Half Life 2 is an excellent investment since there are tons and tons of community made mods you can play for FREE , plus others that are cheap enough to buy thru Steam , in other words HL2 has years of game play value for the dollar.
Good luck and let us know what happens.

I don't have any suggestions except for perhaps a bad disk.
If the drive won't even recognize that there is a disk in the drive with the cd inserted, I would think that the game doesn't even install.
Even with copy protection, I would expect that you should at least be able to read the root directory of the disk, and if other disks work in the drive I wouldn't suspect the drive as being bad.
