PC knife control getting out of hand.

Probably should be under current events, but yeah, I had something similar happen to me in high school, and it had very negative effects on my life for a few years.

So is posting in wrong forums ;)
What's next? No cheese on cheeseburgers! Proposterous! :D

This did not belong in General Knife Discussion. Moved to Knife Laws.

Also, a link and run is bad form. Please tell us what the story is about and what you think of it. You can post a link after you introduce a subject for discussion.

Wow...

Doug Edsall’s son Casey had a lighter he also used to fix his lacrosse stick. The school classified it as an explosive device.

You can imagine what kind of sheep that school will be raising for slaughter after they chase off everyone with health, strength, creativity, and ambition.

I recall my Science 1 and Biology (97-98 and 98-99 respectively) teachers came to me when they needed a lighter.

If these people are so worried about dangerous objects, why are they allowing children to play lacrosse?
Those sticks can kill ya! :D

We've had an outbreak of "lack of common sense" here in Maryland lately. Gang related activity is on the rise, childhood violence, murders and other general debauchery is really getting out of hand.

Typical solution is to adopt the zero tolerance policy - cause if you treat one differently than the other then the lawsuits start flying.

It's a pity cause my kids each have to be very careful where they carry their SAK's anymore - usually it's when they are with me or mom and only on the weekends.

Schools are especially funny here - when theres bad weather and the schools are kept open half the parents call to complain, and when the schools are closed the other half of the parents call to complain. It's no wonder they overreacted about the knives and the lighter. It's not right - but I've lived here all my life and it doesn't surprise me.

Iterations of this same problem have been occurring for at least a decade, and they all seem to relate to "zero tolerance" policies. Zero tolerance is an economical way of circumventing critical thinking. For me, the crack happened when I remember reading about a young boy (like six years old) suspended for sexual harassment for kissing a girl at school.

Zero tolerance policies are put into place to prevent school administrators from being held liable for their actions (decisions/policies). Often, those are the very people who need to be held liable.

My mother-in-law teaches at this school and my wife is a lawyer who grew up there. God help those administrators if her firm gets involved.

I know for a fact there is already a precident case that would invalidate this on the criminal charge side: In Re Melanie H.

We believe that the legislative intent in enacting the statute was to prohibit the carrying of dangerous weapons of any kind onto public school property, particularly such deadly weapons as rifles, guns, and knives. We do not believe that the General Assembly intended to interdict any knife-shaped object, merely potentially dangerous knives.
Accordingly, we hold that in order to convict a person of carrying or possessing any rifle, gun, or knife on school property under [CR § 4–102], the State must show that the instrument possessed can, under the circumstances of the case, reasonably be considered a deadly weapon.
…
It was an all-metal flatware knife which had a blunt edge and a rounded end. The State’s Attorney described it as a “butter knife”; it is obviously not intended for slashing or stabbing. After Mr. Rooney seized the knife, Melanie admitted that it belonged to her and explained that she used it to break into locked food cabinets in the middle of the night at her group home when she was hungry, that is, as a lever rather than a knife.
Under the circumstances of this case, we cannot reasonably conclude that the knife possessed by Melanie was proscribed by the statute, i.e., a knife reasonably adapted for use, or capable of being used, as a deadly weapon. We therefore reverse the judgment of the juvenile court.

How about we make a zero-tolerance policy for the administration? Any adminstrator who makes moronic policy decisions that directly results in the school being sued out of it's already very limited budget shall be excempt from union protection and fired on the spot.

I second the motion.

When I was in high school back in the mid-1970s, students did not repair athletic equipment. We had a storage location for these items (the "pit") and it also served as the repair depot. One of our English teachers was a coach and he was also responsible for repairs. He had a tool box full of the necessary equipment, including hand-held power tools, as well as the knowledge and skill to perform the repairs correctly. For the administration, it was a safety issue, since malfunctioning equipment can lead to injuries. Also, it was a safeguard against students performing unauthorized modifications to the equipment (corked, bats, etc.).

Damn, that's harsh, I'm not so sure the teachers would have acted as harshly down here where I live. Most people in my area hunt or fish or are generally outdoors a lot. They aren't so much sheeple as in other areas, and a student caught with a knife would most likely be sent to the SRO's office and get it back at the end of the day (or have their parents pick it up).
All this zero-tolerance bullshit is there to save the ass of the administrators while they in turn screw over some young persons life. I had a neighbor running for school-board recently, and one of his campaign promises was to put the responsibility of a child's grades entirely on the back of the educators. Sadly, that is impossible when the teachers only have their students for an hour or two each day, and I couldn't bring myself to vote for him. He is a great guy, but I dont want our underpaid teachers to have one more thing to worry about. They are already severely underfunded.
