PCKS decisions

I'd like to order a 110 from PCKS, but I can't decide!

It wouldn't actually be for me, it would be for my g/f's father. He always carries his trusty old 110, but it has been beaten to hell and back again. I'd like to get him a new one, and make it specially for him.

I'd like to go for a natural look. I can't decide between stag or elk horn. I also can't decide which would look better, brass or nickel silver and rivets or no rivets. I know I want a plain edge BG42 blade, that was the easy part.

Also, he carries his 110 strong side, canted forward slightly. It is in a pouch with a snap and a oversized belt loop. Who could make a custom leather sheath similar to what he already has that would fit with the stag or horn handles?

Thanks!

I have always been partial to weathered elk horn and nickel silver. As a user the NS performs better than the brass anyway and the weathered elk has that "I've had this knife so long it is a part of me" look.

Also, as a user, I would go with rivets. There is just something annoying about inserts falling off...

I agree with the non-serrated BG-42 blade...cant go wrong there.

I do not have any input on the sheath. It is kind of funny but as I sit here it has been a long time since I carried a knife in a sheath. If I am hunting it is in the backpack and EDC is clipped into a pocket...

I don't suppose anyone has a picture of elk horn with rivets and NS bolsters...?

Haven't been to the PCKS site for a bit, but any combo should be able to be dialed up there.

Glad I saw this post CJ. I just emailed Joe a couple of days ago with a question about rivets in stag.

I too like the idea of durability, and I have had a lot of knives with rivets in bone handles (mostly slipjoints). Some folks here though have suggested that rivets up the chances of cracking in stag or elk horn--either in production or later as the natural material shrinks slightly with age.

Your comment about rivets makes me think that I might still want to consider them though. I just really like the look of rivets.

When you say that NS is better as a user, is it because it is a harder material? Does it shine up as nicely as the brass?

Right, but it doesn't look nearly the same as the finished knife.

Do a search here on "PCKS Custom 110". You'll turn up a few pics. Any pic you see will not be indicative of your knife though. All the stag or elk horn knives are going to be a little unique.
