need to choose smf. d2 is one of the best hard-use steels, what is more like it if choose between PD1 and s30v?

What makes use pd1? I love my D2 (Colt liner lock with aluminum handles and non-slip grips), but it is hard to sharpen. It is tough and really holds an edge.

Id take PD1 over S30v anyway of the week. Ive never used it, but I have used D2 quite bit and I really like it. Plus, S30v is overrated, made to be a super steel and it never was. Id take tool steel everyday over stainelss super steel.

3 very different steels IMO with different properties. PD1 will be the toughest but you sacrifice corrosion resistance.

S30V with the right heat treat is a phenomenal steel. In Ankerson's testing, S30V with custom heat treat and a 400 grit edge substantially outperformed D2. Quite notably, it also outperformed M390, CTS-204P, Elmax, S90V, and ZDP-189. Even the factory heat treated S30V outperformed D2.

I did some extensive wire stripping and cutting with PD1 strider SNG. It held up amazing. I find it like an upgraded D2. The edge retention was not so special but excelled in toughness! It seemed the same as my sebenza and the S30V strider I had. But I find it tied with CPM 154. That is my favorite Strider steel with PD1 close to it. The CPM just seemed to hold an edge longer for me. A shaving sharp edge I should say.

Personally I wouldn't punch any of my Striders through metal unless it was some type of emergency
where I had to. Additionally I'd grab my multitool or some pliers to cut cable with.

That said, I've owned 3 Strider folders in Pd1 and I like the steel a lot. I haven't used it as much as
I've used their S30V since they use more S30V but I've got a PD1 3/4 ground tanto SMF in a belt sheath
on me as I type this.

For what you say you intend to do with your SMF I'd say definitely go with PD1 or 3V if you can find it.
As far as corrosion resistance they make most of their PD1 in coated blades, although, I have seen some
come in a stonewashed finish. Not sure how stonewashed PD1 would be for corrosion resistance, but that
finish has worked well for me on other steels.

As always, use the right tool for the job, and you won't end up being disappointed if you chip your edge, or
worse. Give PD1 a try I think you will like it.
best of luck.

I think that whichever steel you choose, it will be inappropriate for those activities.

The only steels I've found to hold up to those activities are M2 & M4 (and their variants m35, m42, t42, etc - which you'll have to make yourself)
