This is a question for all you digitally organized types out there:)
My father's birthday is coming up at the end of the month, and I want to get him something useful. I've got him knives for several years. However, this past spring my grandfather decided that at 75 years of age it was time for him to stop selling for the family business and turn that over to my dad. Well, my father is a great builder and really sharp in business. However, his organization skills are on par with that of his son's....he has none;) When he goes on sales calls he takes an ancient leather binder and when you open it a multitude of drawings, patterns, and post-it notes with dates and times spill out.

Now, he's not going to be able to get away from the clutter of some of that stuff. However, he really needs to be more organized when it comes to keeping track of people. Several times I've had to try to dig up old messages to see if I could find his lost info.

Here's a few things that I need in a PDA:

Ease of use. I'm not talking about being easy for most technically savvy people to use. I mean, if they made a PDA that had a giant red button in the center that spells out "ON", that would ideal;) I love my father, but he is not remotely even in the 20th century. I need something that does NOT have a lot of bells and whistles.

Not Expensive. For one thing, my dad might sit on/drop/forget this thing in the first week he owns it. Also, due to a tax error NOT in my favor, my wife and I are pretty strapped for cash for the next couple of months (some one want to explain to me WHY I have pay taxes on something that I OWN??...nevermind. We'll just say "Dadgum Gubment!: and leave it at that;)) A $500 Palm like my wife's is not in the cards. Besides, her's does everything under the sun which would both confuse and anger my father.

All my dad needs is something that will organize times, dates, names, and numbers easily so that he can schedule meetings a little easier. internet or WiFi or any of that jazz is not needed. I have no idea if they offer it a lower end model, but a "write and type" feature would be nice so that he can scrawl out some notes without pecking them out.

My plan is to get him a tool that is so easy to use that even he will try it out. Also, I'm going to make him a nice heavy duty leather holster for it with his name and everything stamped into it. I figure that if this gizmo is hidden in a hand-made and very smart looking case from his son...then he might actually carry it and thus figure it out;)

Any advice would be much appreciated. I have shopped for a few of these myself (never bought one though). However, being the geek that I am, I would want everything you could get and then some. For my dad, I need to ease him into this sort of technology.

Thanks so much

Jake

There are so many different models. Your best bet would be to go to Best Buy, Circuit City, or CompUSA and check them out to see what you think that he would like.

To be honest with you, I have owned and used 4 different ones and I have always returned to a paper based system. I personally find the PDA's a pain in the ass. Some people love them and can write very quickly--I am not one of them and I am very tech oriented.

I bought my wife an HP Ipaq 2755 and she loves it and uses it regularly. I really like the Ipaqs and the Sony's.

Jake?

Don't. Very nice idea, but don't.

He doesn't want it. He could afford one if he thought it would help, but he really doesn't want it. It will end up as "stuff."

How about a busty blonde in stilletto heels? Someone named "Myra" who would write down all the stuff for him and giggle at his jokes?

He had one of those....and she became my stepmom:D I'm pretty sure she knows all the tricks and wouldn't allow it;)

I'll think on it. I'll head over to the office/electronic stores and take a look at what they have. Maybe I'll just get him a better paper system. Thanks for all the info, gentlemen:)

Try a Palm Z22

For under $100, I have one, it's pretty idiot proof, I mean I can work it.

...Your planner, journal and calendar all in one little place. The Palm Z22 organizer was designed by the makers of the original Palm Pilot specifically for people who haven’t seen what a handheld organizer can do. Everything is super simple; a touch of a button brings up your appointments, addresses, and more. The Palm Z22 organizer also comes with a three-step set-up guide and easy tutorials on how to use it.

Hm, I think Kismet's right, Jake.

I have the latest color Palm, and I just don't use it. And I can write in "Graffitti" just fine.

Get him a cool Fisher "Space Pen" and a leather executive pad. That's what replaced my Pilot. :foot:

Blackberry's probably too much for him, and a PSP is like $250.

So much for toys.

Hey, get him a khukuri! I know this cool site where they sell them on the web. ;)

I'm afraid Kismet is right, too.
But it wouldn't hurt. If it ends up as 'stuff', it is stuff that was given to him in love. He will know that. Besides, someonelse can use it if he never does. It should prove useful to your family in some capacity. He probably doesn't use all the knives you give him either, but that hasnt stopped you from giving.

I wouldn't agonize over it. It is always possible it will catch hold in his mind, and he will have the equvilant of patterns, notes, post its, and drawings in the electronic device instead of his leather note book.

You could always give him a flashlight. Old men seem to require a disproportionate amount of those in the house.

I have a Dell Axim x51v which I love, but I'm also into systems and network support.
I'm going to have to go with the others and say that a PDA is probably the wrong way to go.
BTW how is his eyesight? Coordination? If there any issues there, all a PDA will do is annoy him. Something paper-based might be better, but if you do go electronic, the Palm Z22 is probably a safe choice.

Give him 2 paper-based things. A better organizer (like a Daytimer), and a matching small portfolio case with dividers, to carry his sketches etc. Get that one with a zipper, so stuff won't fall out. Get one with places to hold the stuff he needs for his work - pens, calculator, whatever.

'Cause he'll be colossally frustrated if a sketch he needed wasn't anywhere near his fingertips ... and with a Palm, it wouldn't be. So eventually it won't meet his needs, and he'll leave it in the truck or back at the office.

I used a Palm for a few years - when I found it most useful was when I was out of my office at meetings for half of most days, but AT my desk the other half. Meeting reminder pinging was really helpful ... but it took discipline to enter all the data. If he doesn't do it now with a paper system, he won't do it with a PDA either.

Thanks so much, guys:) I know I'm just going to have to go out there and look. Basically, I'm going to find him SOMETHING that will make his "new" job easier on him. My grandfather was the best. However, he also didn't do the construction, nor did he have a house full of kids ranging 4 to 16;)

My pop is frazzled, but a good deal of it is his own fault. I appreciate all the ideas:)

You in the market, Kis?;) More expensive than the initial sticker price would suggest...

And, so I am told, on-site servicing can be a killer.

OH NO ---- I have had 4 of those boogers and they have all shot craps. But hey not problem I have it synchronized everyday until my computer shot total craps within 12 hours of the stupid pda. I lost everything:eek: The one thing that has endured was my 3x5 daytimer I carried in my front pocket and the print out of the address book that I did once a month. Buy him a good pocket knife and 3x5 daytimer kit (it also includes an address book). He probably wont use the daytimer and if he loses the pocket knife maybe I'll get lucky and find it. So buy him a good one.

I'm a big supporter of the cell phone and digital camera, but the PDA is a gawd-cursed invention if I ever saw one. I have three of them in a drawer that beeped and died when they were most needed, and they represent three efforts to load all my "stuff" that were totally lost.

Why not get him a 3" x 5" notebook of some pedigree and a really nice pen? That is the route I went and the gadgets are not missed at all.

Jake,

I vote with the rest of the Luddites.

How about a nice pen and a Wenger binder? I use a date book and sheets set up in a format similar to the Cornell method of note taking, Using that as a in process work sheet is the only way I manage to stay on top of things.

(The cell phone helps too...)

While I don't disagree with everyone saying don't do it, I am the person you describe in your father so I have a much different perspective.

First of all, forget about new. A PDA is generally well cared for since they are not cheap, and/or slightly used. Both of which equal up to great values on the used market.

Ask around with the people you know so you can look at their cars and tell what kind of shape they keep things in. PDA's are fairly rugged since they get beat around all the time. I am constantly sitting my big arse down on mine. :)

I am currently using a Palm Vx which a nontechnical person CAN use. It will synch with my laptop, and the main things I use are the address book, to do list, and calendar.

The info is still written down on my trusty spiral bound notepad, and then later entered into the computer. Then, it is downloaded to the Palm.

If he has a secretary he can get that person to enter the stuff for him. That way instead of trying to keep up with a post it with the phone number he just looks it up in the palm, which is in alphabetical order.

You can still buy the nice portfolio you would really like to get him that will fit a notebook he likes, and has a pocket for the Palm to be carried.

Don't worry about color and super features since they will never be used by him.

Cheap is the word here.

You didn't say what their business consists of?

Good luck.
