Problem is the sheath dulls the edge.
It belongs to a mate that does a lot of salt water fishing, he's had it a few months and it's frustrating him with its constant bluntness despite regular use of his Sharpmaker.
I sharpened it today for him (WE), nothing too fancy just formed an edge at ~18' per side and went up to 600 grit. It cut A4 nice and smooth, shaved hair off my arm pretty good.
Put it back in the sheath and pulled it out, twice. The first inch or so of the edge from the handle was now dull, wouldn't cut A4. Patches along the rest of the edge were also dulled to a greater or lesser degree. Obviously the sheath is contacting the edge, although I was very surprised at how quickly and badly it dulled it.
I sharpen it at less then 20' per side same as I do his PE Pacific and Dragonfly Salt, which he then maintains with his SM for a good while. He's had the Pacific for 'bout 3 years and it gets a lot of use so he is familiar with PE H1 edge holding and using the SM to maintain it.
He's looking at knocking up a basic leather sheath for the Aqua to get around the problem, or just to wrap in a rag for a while, to see if the edge holding is similar to the Pacific with some use, without the sheath being a factor.
He and I are both Spyderco fans and have near 30 of them between us, so this is not to knock Spyderco at all, just want to raise a problem. A sheath that badly dulls the edge as soon as you put the blade in it can't be right.
No I haven't emailed Spyderco about it yet, thought I would post here first to see if others have this problem, or maybe tell me I'm missing something, or maybe even get a response from Spyderco.
