Pe Hyper...

Aloha ALL,

So I got a Boker Plus PE Hyper a bit after Christmas from BokerUSA.

Anyway, I immediately stripped one of the clip screws while trying to change the clip to it's "proper location" (LOL!) enabling a tip up carry. D'Oh! Guess the screws are Loc-Tited in? Ah well...so this will be my "tip down" beater. Doesn't matter too much because I got used to tip down carry from my time with my SS Police, Caly' Jr., BM Stryker, etc...Oh yes, speaking of that BM Stryker...it once partially opened while I was placing it back in RFP, and I was treated to the site of the blade jutting out of my pants! Good thing the blade went away from my body and not towards it otherwise...*ahem*. Um...anyway, my PE Hyper has done the same thing minus going through my RFP. So PLEASE BE VERY AWARE if ya carry your HYPER in tip down, and you're putting it in your pockets or IWB. This has never occurred with ANY folder I ever carried in tip up mode.

Again, I have been amazed by the Ti-Coat on these blades. By now, there should be a few scratches on the blade considering "the things I have done" with this PE Hyper. Not a single scratch. I was doing some slashes on a thick cardboard box and I know I hit some heavy duty staples, then I (okay, here comes the scoldings) threw it a buncha times. The cut outs on the handle causes the knife to make a "movie sound effect" when thrown at times. LOL! The 440C holds well, and is easy to "get back". I have not cleaned my PE Hyper since I got it. I wiped it on my BDU's a few times, but that's about it...I wanna see how long this Ti-Coat will stay blemish free. Also, many a mosquito have died from getting slapped by the flat of this "wide lil' medium" blade! *Hee-hee-HEE*!!!

All in all, this "lil' medium bugger" is a winner. Slim, stout, keeps a good working edge, flat deep carry, no printing, not too big, yet not that small...Yes, I might be a tad biased, but ya know if it sucked I would say so.

Some pics of it on a small Christmas tree I got for the stray cats that come by the house. (Hey, the dog and cats IN the house shared our tree, so I figured them four legged waifs and strays deserved a tree too!)

Hope you all are having a great 2008 thus far. Thanks for checking out this thread, and I will "catch up" with the other threads soon...;-)
God bless and do take care!

He Chad,

Hope you a fine 2008 too.

Nice thingy that griptape on the clip. Why didn't i think about that one.

I suspect you went fast at changing the clip. I did go slow and tip up without molested screws.Too much pressure on little screws you know can be harmful... i noticed the screwthreads from factory tip down were not coated ti wize. They showed some discolouring and blank steel. Think it is ti coating applied after clip assembledge????

I haven't detected unwanted openings on the blade when closed on mine. But i noticed you kept it tip down. At tip up carry it never has opened its blade on me unwanted. The ball on the front end framelock in mine is solid and keepin the blade closed enough to my satisfaction. I would dismantle yours to check the ball detend function???

So far the tip down screwthreads thats the only itty bitty detail that bothered me a bit. Next to that it came razor sharp but with a kind of rough edge. I finished it after a couple of days with some fine 204 stones and a leatherbelt to get it scary sharp.

But this Ti coating is truely amazing . No scratch or stripemark sofar and i did some nasty cardboard hard plastic package cuttin with it. On a old fashioned PVD/DLC coating it would have shown.

I think the bronze washers are a improvement too compared to the teflon/ nytrilon washers. I happened to notice that these teflonish washers on my subclaw are misformin maybe because my excesive use of WD 40 to get rid of glue on factory boxes/ glued coatings on package material i cut with this one. I think the subclaw is perfect for these kind of jobs.

The Hyper is an excellent slicer . I think to much to thick blades come out today. I am wondering about that. A knive is suppost to be a cutting tool and not a prybar. That's why i don't like these stryder thick blades . NO OFFENCE STRYDER LOVERS . Just my simple thoughts. If needed carry a crawbar in the trunk of your car i think for these kind of jobs. For a knive thinner blades benefit in their cutting abilities i think.
Some people bothered about the cutouts in the G10 slab but i think they provide good grip points for slashing tasks in not full grip position. Thats why i like these cutouts to be square angled and NOT rounded out...

I am getting myself some nice woods . thinking about tryin some hyper/biscuit scale swappin' myself . Hope they can compete with the famous potterma but i highly doubt it as this is my first attempt ... ;)

Take care Brother

I just got mine today. Truly impressed by the high bang-for-the-buck factor. Love how solid it feels, the fat blade, excellent lock-up, smooth action....the whole package just works. This is not a dig to the Trance, which I also own, but this seems like a step up in terms of bringing even more value to the table. The Hyper seems somehow more refined, more solid, and more precise.

My only (and minor at that) criticism is that the edges of the G-10 cut-outs are a bit abrupt. Makes for more defined indexing points and aggressive grip, but I think I would have tossed a "break all edges" notation on the manufacturing instructions for the cut-outs on the G-10 scale.

Otherwise, it's a brilliant "little" package. Has immediately displaced my much loved Trance as my go to piece for tossing in the front pocket of my work slacks.

Highly recommended. The entire CLB series should be nominated for some sort of award, IMHO. Really remarkable examples of intelligent design, quality materials and manufacturing at a price everyone can afford to enjoy.

Chad-As usual, you have designed an extraordinary edged weapon that exceeds the desires of even the most discriminating knife collector/user/warrior/whittler (??). Truly amazing. You are so far batting a solid .1000.

Aloha guys,

Mahalo much for your kind replies. Nice to meet you Firebat and mahalo MUCH for your kind words, and good to see my old buddies here.

Anyway, ya know...this Ti-Coat is beginning to amaze me. My work buddy has been repeatedly throwing his PE M-Type and CE Hyper into a bench (He justifies this as, "a method of testing".) and there is EXTREMELY little or no wear on the tip of his knives.

I have been rotating the Hypers and M-Types...still no blade wear at ALL.

Whatever the process used in the coating, it's good stuff!;)

God bless and mahalo guys!

I just recieved a plain edge Hyper today and I experienced the same thing. I know I'm not a complete idiot, and I know I had the proper driver, so I figured there must be someone else with the same issue...and whudya know, the designer himself! So unfortunately, this one is going back for a replacement.

Other than the stripped screw, I cannot believe the exceptional value of this knife. The fit and finish, the ergonomics, the lock up,etc...is unbelievable for a knife this cheap. BTW, I have all the subcom folder variations. Are there any plans to release higher quality steel versions?

Hi All. The Hyper is my Fav. CLB. But since "gull wing' made me an Orange scale for my Trance, and I'm on a Low Budget, the Hyper will be awhile.

Aloha s.c.,

:o...hey sorry about that stripped screw. I am almost a complete idiot, but still...mine should have held properly. One of my Knifebro's just experienced the same thing? Wassup with these darn screws??? I do appreciate your kind words regarding "the rest" of the HYPER though...I am just sorry you're gonna have to wait to experience it...

As for a "higher quality steel" version of the SFV's and hopefully the Trance...there has been constant prodding by yours truly for sometime now. I will ask again to maybe make a Limited Edition version.;)

God bless and keep us posted on the return of your HYPER!!!

Daywalker---I sense Good Karma. The right thing will happen. Keep up the good work and good attitude. Your Hyper is on my list.

I found the same issue with the first Hyper I took apart.... While the screw heads are hex, a Torx driver seems to fit better. Haven't stripped a screw head since I started using the Torx driver.

Really? What size bit? When I first got into knives, I always cursed manufacturers for using those torx bits and was actually pleasantly surprised that the hyper were hex screws. Now I realize why the torx is better.

I changed my clip with a T6 Torx at the start when i got it. I had no issues with molested threads. (Pivot needs T8)

I think the Torx compared to Hex has a little more detailed beak that gives more grip imo.

Unscrewing and thightnin little screws demands carefull handling. Tight is thight don't overthighten. Another little trick on unscrewing on NIB knives is to apply a little heath with fe a paintstripper or hairblower so the loctite loosens up.

I also recommand not to keep the pivot tension to loose!

The thumbstuds at the hyper stick out approx 1mm above g10 side and 2mm above framelock side.

Sometimes, (this happened 2 times to me before thightin the pivot a bit) , the thumbstuds somewhat work like a wave opener caused by friction with inside pocket fabrics.
This can cause the blade to open a bit when tension on pivot is loose. Especially when running or retreiving /pocketing the knive.

Maybe Chad and Boker could improve this a bit by rounding/texturing the thumbstuds edges a bit in combination with shortening them a bit so they come somewhat more flush with the scales in closed position??

For the rest i find it a great EDC knive; one of my favourites!!!

Still no scratches on the Blade !!!!! Still rock solid lockup!!
( I did not throw it at something yet Chad, I did not stab it in a cardoor yet, or tried to molest a steelbucket

Thanks for the tip on the screws, I'll have to do that when my replacement comes in.

I think that "wave" feature is great! I can wave all my subcoms with ease, and look forward to doing the same with the hyper.

Yep, T6 for the scale and clip screws, T8 for the pivot...

Here's a Hyper I molested this weekend...

I finally recieved a replacement Hyper (the first one had stripped pocket clip screws) and after putting the clip on the proper side, I realized this is one of the best values out there. I love its simple and open design, and the finish is quite attractive. I also purchased an M-type, which is also fantastic.

I'm still hoping for future releases with premium steel. Daywalker, thanks for such a wonderful knife.
