Heya. I recently handled a Pentagon Elite, my first exposure to SOG.

I liked the overall quality of the knife, but was kinda scared off by the lock.

Is it liable to come unlocked in hard use situations, or can it be relied on absolutely? Any input from anyone who has personal experience with this knife or with other info would be most appreciated.

Thanks.

I'd trust it. If it had issues you would have had about 10000 posts already telling you to run away from it.

If you're worried about the lock, there is a fixed-blade Pentagon. No danger of the knife folding up on you, there. It "unfolds" out of a purpose-built kydex sheath pretty darn quick too. ;)

Hi Elpaso, Other's have spoken well of the PE14 and I agree, so I'll just add a little more..... Got one a few years (Summer 2004) ago and had a custom Leather sheath made for it. IMO it's to big for a pocket clip. Anyways, I have had no problems with the knife lock, handle or blade. It works great. Impresses people when I pull out that Huge razer sharp edge to cut tomatoes or fruit for a church pick nick. :D The knife was built really strong. I've flicked mine open so many times I've lost count. Can flick it open and closed with out thinking about it. That gets rather adictive.

I'm in the middle of a week long vacation from work. Got my trusty X-42 Field knife on today, tomorrow it will be my PE14. :D And when my local store starts carrying the Spec Elite, I'll get one of those too.

Thanks very much for the feedback, guys. Makes sense that if it was dangerous we'd of heard about it. Just seemed to me that if you had occasion to back slash or something that the lock button could be disengaged accidentally by the thumb.

I'll look at it again. The other thing that gave me pause is that it is so obviously weaponized that it might be hard to tell a LEO that is just my utility pocket knife.:D

Anybody know what kind of steel it is?

For a few dollars more...

For a few dollars more you can get the SOG X Ray Vision 71.
Very similar construction to the PE-14(Zytel handle and nested steel liners;
Arc-Lock), but better steel. ATS-34.

I've had both the PE-14 and XRV 71 and I sold the PE-14.
Kept the 71. Weird blade shape, and I don't carry it very often,
but I like it. And I like it a whole lot better than I liked the PE-14.

My .02
