Peanut, best EDC? Alternatives?

Hi all!

I was wondering what might be best traditional style knife to carry around. Something smallish... not tiny. I got Opinel #3 and its tiny, yet its good and carbon steel but something bigger than Opinel #3 and smaller than Case Sodbuster Jr.

A peanut style would probably fit nicely into this bill. Something which would be nice to pair Leatherman to add style and class... And something that is more traditional than Leatherman.

Other than peanut, what might be suitable for office work and carry around not to scare sheeple people. Kershaw Skyline is excellent EDC but... Sheeple people are sheeple.

I have been looking Case Peanut and Case mini-copperlock. Copperlock would be near perfect for Gentleman's knife I am also looking but for EDC? When the blade locks I think sheeple people have already panicked and ran into corner and tremble in fear...

*sighs* So any suggestions for something traditional that won't scare sheeple people...

The Case Baby Butterbean (shown on the left) is similar in size to the Peanut, but heftier and with a pleasing shape. Its one of my favorites, and doesn't scare the sheep.

How about a medium stockman? I know its bigger than the peanut but if you are in the company of sheep just open the smaller blade.

The peanut has its proponents, but I'm a big fan of the medium stockman. Not too large and heavy to EDC, nor is it likely to scare the non-knife using public. I like it better than the peanut because you can actually grab onto the handle. The peanut, while a better size for carry, is uncomfortable for me when it comes to actually using.

Plus, three blades are always better than two. :D

I typically like mid-sized knives. I am carrying a Queen Canoe similar to the one picture at top. Nice and thin, carries well in the office. I often carry a Barlow. I like handles that give me something to hold on to. That baby butter bean looks sweet. I think it would fit my hand better than a peanut.

CASE pen-knife is worth considering too.Slim single spring knife that fits the pocket well and gives a slightly longer handle.Mini Trapper with Wharncliffe is another to think about as well.

I would have to vote for a medium Stockman. You can do everything with this knife from slicing tomatoes to castrating an ornery bull.

Judging from the number of threads asking this very question over the years (and the myriad answers), you'll need one of these if you want to carry the best slipjoint with you:

If there were a right answer, I guess Gus and I could probably shut the lights off and go home. ;):p

I don't think that pack is big enough Blues!:P
Might need a Peterbuilt to haul em around in.

Good point! :p

Lucky thing we have Mike and a couple other truckers on the forum to help out.

The Peanut, at 2-7/8", is really just a small Jackknife. A Jackknife has a large clip blade and a small pen blade. If you want to got a bit bigger, Case makes a small Jackknife at 3-3/8" with rounded bolsters, and Queen makes a small Jackknife at 3-1/4" with the same blade configuration as the Peanut, just a little larger. You can get the Case in CV (carbon) steel, and the Queen in D2 (tool steel).

I already carry a backbag ^^ And I have Medium Stockman... now that my brother would finally manage mail me my stockman to me... Its a long story...

So baby butterbean
Medium Stockman
Pen knife.

I got 1 out of three, so I'll be checking the pen knife next. But its good excuse *ahem* reason to buy a more traditional slipjoints... To find the best EDC...

Also knowing the masses, I'd always carry SAK with scissors in case you need to cut in public.. but I know your desire for actual knife. I feel you bro. :D

Anything around 3 inches closed would probably work well. I've been carrying a Swayback Jack for a couple of weeks now and haven't gotten any negative reactions. Before that my go-to knife to use for light tasks around NKP was a SAK... still carry that, too, for the scissors and bottle opener and such, but blade-wise, the Case comes out first.

I strongly recommend a small texas jack or a medium jack. It was the edc of most people before the 1950's.

God Bless

A Small Congress, 2 blades would be nice too but it's not a very common pattern.Queen do one in BEM I believe. Yeah, several rucksacks are going to be needed with custom built knife-rolls inside them......

+1

Case make Jacks, Pen knives and Stockmans in 3 3/8" and Stockmans in 3 1/4", some in carbon

Queen make a Jack and Stockman in D2 in 3 1/4"

Also, don't forget the tiny toothpick at 3"

Alright I found a nice and small pen knife from case and there are several beautiful texas jack knives... Thanks for recomendations ^^
