Back when I was a new arrival in the wonderful land of traditionals, I engaged in a little Peanut sacrilege and smoothed out the sharp hump: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...ng-Down-a-Peanut-s-quot-Hump-quot-(Pics-Added) That little Nut was long ago passed on to a new owner, but I recently couldn't resist getting another, this time in the venerable chestnut bone.

I really thought that I would happily accept this one as it is, hump and all. It is traditional icon, after all. But in spite of my pure intentions, I found that the sharp hump in the clip's spine bothers me just as much now as it did way back when. So, my Work Sharp got to work today and I once again have a Nut with a smoother and more pleasing (to me) spine. This operation was a bit less radical than the previous one and there is still the outline of a hump, just much smoother and more subtle. I haven't decided if I prefer the original more radical mod or this one. I'll probably leave as is for now and meditate on it. Like the barber said, "We can always take more off." :)

Now as then, I'd welcome any opinions---first mod better, second mod better, or....how dare you mess with a classic!

I don't see the need for it myself, but I don't think any of your mods look bad either. I'd have any of them on my nut.

Nice job! I like it......but I won't be doing it to either of my two peanuts. Enjoy.... Looks good.

Great modification. I've always found the nut to be so small but packs a big punch that its about the perfect knife for 90 percent of the pocket carry. I am curious, and mean no disrespect, but why did the pronounced hump bother you? That bone, btw, is really nice. SJF

Gents, thanks for the kind words. I really wasn't expecting to convert any dedicated Peanut fans, but you are generous with your comments.

Le Fermier, now that is what I call a hump!

Slip joint fan, that is a good question. As my friend, klineh (Jon) says, I like my knives to double as "worry stones". I like the feel of a smooth surface without sharp angles or corners, so for instance on GECs I almost always smooth out the sharp tangs. In addition, I also like the look of a smooth curving surface in certain knives, and I guess the Peanut is one of those. So, to sum it up, I de-humped it for the feel and for the look. (And maybe because I have problems leaving well enough alone!)
