Peanut vs. Baby Butterbean vs. Tuxedo

I'm a recent peanut convert (always had liked the Camillus Pony jack better, but they are nowhere near as stout as a peanut--that's what converted me.)

Thing is, I like spear point blades better than clip points, and I love the look of long pulls--both of which appear on the BB and the Tux.

I realize that the peanut may be the king when it comes to little knives, but how do the other patterns compare against it?

The one thing a Peanut has is that super pointy tip of the clip blade. The BB will have two relatively rounded points when compared.
The pointy tip is one of the features of a Peanut that I really appreciate. Sorry no personal experience with a Tuxedo pattern.

The baby butter bean is basically a small canoe, so it has sunk joints and round ends, making it very pocket friendly. The handle is also a bit wider than the peanut, although being a single spring it is not quite as thick. Overall, I find it a bit more comfortable in hand and considerably stouter than the peanut.

The Tuxedo on the other hand is very slender and narrow, much more lightly built than either the peanut or the butter bean. The Case Tuxedo is at the large end of the size range for a tux, and even so it is a far cry from stout. That said, I like it better than either of the others for a small knife, as the handle is long enough for my old stiff fingers to get a hold on, at least for the sort of light tasks it is suitable for.

I definitely prefer the peanut, just like Billy said, if only for the pointy clip. I reckon a slightly bigger 3 1/4 to 3 3/8 inch butter-bean, with a pointier secondary (Wharncliffe?) would be fantastic!

I've been wanting to try a tuxedo as well, but I've been (unfairly, I think) unsure about how tough the thin bolsters are. I can't get over the feeling that the blade or tang will fail at a slight breeze.

The little 3⅛" pen knife is a good alternative, and they can be found with long pull spear blade mains. This one is from Boker USA.

I would go for the peanut, hands down. On a small knife I like having a choice of blade shapes, and on that small pocketknife I like for one of those blades to have a fine point. The second blade can be a spear/pen, wharncliff or sheep foot. That's the one thing Inver cared for on the butter bean/canoe, having two of the same blades, just different sizes. Now if you can find an old Boker 240 then that's a great pen knife. Clip main and spear second with a 3 1/8 overall closed length. Kind of like a Buck 109 companion.

Now that is GORGEOUS! Off to look at the site. That might be the perfect little knife for my mammoth ivory recover I've been envisioning.

The Case Mini copperhead seems to have the same measurements than the BOKE 240 and the same combination of blades. (a ton easier to come by too).

Carbon Boker 240 3 1/8", had one 15 years ago for a day and gifted it to someone, finally got around to picking one up again, new for $18.50, a overlooked pattern the Case Eisenhower senator pen 3 1/8" the elongated bolsters add to it's rigidness IMO and is one of my favorite small knives, and the classic peanut I've done everything with the peanut.

Hi,

Another #21/#22 Pony Jack lover!!!!!!! To me, they are more Peanut than the classic Case version........

I have owned a few BB's/mini-Canoes. A couple Rough Riders and a couple Case. One of my Daughters made off with one RR and I gifted the Pocketworn Case. I still have a Case BB though and I do like carrying it for dress. As mentioned, it's a stout little thing. And if you like spear blades it would be a very good choice.

I also have a Camillus Tuxedo. A very thin, and delicate little knife. I've carried it a couple of times, but as much as I like the look, I'm not fond of using it. Too tiny and thin for my old arthritic extra large hands. Perhaps if it was a bit larger I would like it more.

Perhaps my most favorite small knife is my Grandfathers' Camillus Slim Senator. A penknife pattern with a scissors substituted for one blade.

I like the little GEC #9 Esquire. I think there are Long pulls on the Northfield versions.

And for clip blades, I prefer the Schrade 708, over the Peanut.

I agree with Liamstrain, the 708 is very nice, so much so that my wife keeps claiming it. Here it is between a Case peanut and a Schrade 12OT.
